FYI, you can also buy them electronically and have them on your phone. No more paper copies to carry around!

Customers who purchase online via smartphone won’t receive a conventional paper license. Instead, they’ll receive a text message or email that serves as proof of a valid fish or game license to state conservation officers.

1 yr license should be valid for one year from date of purchase.

That would even be more confusing. It would make more sense to have it be run on the calendar year, so everyone would need to buy a new license starting Jan 1 for the year they are fishing.

I do appreciate this topic coming up on this site though. Headed to Lake of the Woods for the first time this weekend and definitely wouldn't have checked my license otherwise. I would have assumed my current license was still good.

Fishing license used to go from Jan. 1 to Jan. 1 years ago. Then it was changed to last day in February like it is now. DNR really got everyone confused when they messed with the end of February date. I hope they learned to leave it alone now.

BTW, I purchased mine last week online and the internet fee was 69 CENTS!! I can't even start my car and back out of the driveway for that! I always save my license as a .pdf so I can print out what I need.

I remember those days. You had to go to a place that was open on New Years day to get a license. Back when that was first changed from New Years very few people were fishing on Mar. 1. I remember an early Mar Perch/snowmobile trip to Leech Lake in the early eighties. It seemed as if we had the whole lake to ourselves. We caught plenty of nice fish on a plain hook and a bobber, we pulled them in hand over hand.

I believe it was the legislature and not the DNR that did all the recent changing around.

Went online to purchase my license and cannot find any option to get it through text or email. Called the number at the bottom of the page for help, and the lady I talked to had no idea about getting it via text. Anyone get their license through text ???? It would be nice.
