Boat Trailer Tires

folke2000

Question

I know that this has been asked before, but I need to replace the tires on my boat trailer (shorelander for 17' Lund). Last time, I went with Goodyear Marathons, but only lasted a few years. It's not like I travel extensively, but I would think that I should get more than 3 years from them.

Any suggestions???

Thanks,

Folke

not sure if your running axels with springs, or torsion axels, but if there is a issue with the camber, or something is bent, this will reduce the tires life also. I keep my tires 45-50 psi, and have many miles and years on them, and they still look great.

Boat trailer tires will not get the mileage one would expect from automotive tires. You are getting the right info about tire pressure. Rotate them from side to side. I switch sides with mine every year and get 4 or 5 seasons at 6 to 8 K use rate out of my tires. I could probably get another season or so out out of them, but I frequently travel long distances on gravel roads and I don't want marginal tires.

Another impact can be the weight of the trailer. Weight adds up fast when you consider the boat, trailer, motor, fuel load, batteries, equipment and all the other stuff we cram in our boats. Make sure your tires can support the weight.

A friend of mine owns a local tire shop, according to him Goodyear Marathons are the only good one out there.

I have 11 years on mine traveling to Rainy 3+ time a year plus local runs. I think this year is the time to replace even though there is plenty of tread left.

In MN miles on a boat trailer tire do not matter much (they all have low miles), time will kill your tires LONG before you ever run out of tread. I chuckle every time I see an ad for a boat with a picture of the tire tread.

The DOT recommends replacing tires every 6 years and that is from the date of manufacture not the date you bought them. Check out these links:
