Roof deicer delevery system

Bobby Bass

Question

With warm weather here, at least for a few days and after having received yet some more snow Ice dams are a problem. Here is a simple way to deliver ice melt right on the roof where you want it. I take a large plastic juice bottle and cut out one side. I then drill a hole through the bottom and insert a long handled Painters wand through the bottom hole and out the top of the bottle. Some tape to hold it on the pole so it can't swivel and you have a way to put salt/deicer anywhere that the pole can reach. This will also work on the pole you use for your snow rakes. Have a helper do the filling for you and you can make quick work of putting the melt on that ice dam.

Good tip.

FWIW, I have tried the salt in a nylon and it didn't work for me. When you already have a dam, you want to get rid of it quick. But really the best way to avoid damage is the make sure the water behidn the dam can escape. Either with Bobby's idea to create a channel, or I have been using heating cable with great success since my first dam a bunch of years ago.

Key thing with electric heat cable, get it BEFORE everybody else is out buying it for the same reason wink

You can just throw it up there temporarily in the valleys and also across the dam itself. It will melt down almost immediately and create the channels for the melted water to escape.

Then in spring, go up and place it properly and it is then ready for the next time. I also fixed my ventilation and insulation problem, but that is topic for another/previous threads. Not sure I even need my heat cable anymore, but I still use it as I don't want that mess again. Good luck!
