So with the power outage many suffered with last week in the sw metro, my wife was shocked I didn't have a generator. I told her I seriously doubted we needed one but she thought maybe we should. I told her if we got one, I wanted a good one, so besides the small Honda 2000’s, what else would be considered a good small portable generator. Of course she doesn't reaize this is the first step towards a permanent ice house on Mille Lacs, but I do.........

I have the Honda 2000. It is a great little unit that stays in the job trailer and runs our tools when there is no on site power or if there are no outlets close.

The gens from Yamaha and Subaru are also pretty bulletproof.

It would seem that the Honda 2000 might meet your needs but probably not your wife's expectations. I would think that at a minimum you want to keep the fridge, freezer and furnace going. Sump pumps if the crank up during wet periods also have to be on the list. A light or two at night would probably be nice. But since you live in a cave perhaps her expectations are minimal.

That is what is referred to as "Phase 2 planning". You buy the generator for something she would approve even though it won't do the job, Once it is purchased and you use it, she finds out it isn't big enough so you convince he the best solution is to dedicate the 2000 to the ice house and then buy a bigger 6500w gen for the house. Problem solved......
