Leech Lake

Recommended Posts

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We plan on fishing this Saturday with little experience on this body of water. We would love to go out of Brevic and fish around Bear Island. Would the "sheep pastures" hold fish this time of year? Thanks for any help.

I was on a lake not far from leech last weekend for the opener. The pattern that I found was that the smaller fish (presumably males) were in shallow structure (sand and weeds) and the larger ones were in deeper water not far from the structure. I was marking a lot of baitfish in deeper water so I'm assuming that the bigger ones were feeding on them.

I've fished Leech a few times the past few years, but never this early. Check the water temps. If it's in the mid to high 50s, they will probably still be in a post spawn pattern like I found last weekend. I'd say find some shallow structure (4-8 feet) to fish that has a good dropoff to deep water nearby.

I don't have a detailed map in front of me, but I'm pretty sure there are shallow rocks/sand near Bear Island, and cabbage in the bays nearby it.

Good luck!
