Walleye Tournament Recap

Recommended Posts

The first All Women's Walleye Tournament was held on May 12th in Winneconne Wis. put on by WI Women Fish and the World Walleye Association. The conditions were rather challenging, we had wind gusts of up to 35 mph on Saturday so pre-fishing was out of the question. Come Sunday morning the forecast again was for winds of 10-20 MPH with gusts to 25. It was 30 degrees at 6 am when we hit the lake. There are several lakes connected by the Wolf River and the smaller boats were advised to stay on the river. There were 18 boats of all sizes and types. I am totally unfamiliar fishing in a river system or for searching for walleyes in 2-3 feet of water.

I have a Lund 1650 Rebel with a 25 HP Merc on it and my partner and I headed out onto one of the main lakes to fish a small channel she knew about. It was a lot further over there than I thought in a hefty wind. In the channel I manage to hit a log with the outboard and foul the prop in some awful weeds and cane. Gave it an hour with no bites so we decided to make our way back fishing all the way. I looked down and discovered I had burned a half a tank of gas getting over there. So we decided to head back to the river area, get gas, and fish there as the wind was getting a little dicey.

The bait store with the gas was on the other side of a bridge on lake Butte Des Morts, there were white caps with 2-3 foot waves over there. Getting gas we had a 3 foot wave come over the back of the boat filling the whole back end with water. I immediately flipped on the bilge pump and headed for the quiet side of the bridge. I spent the next 3 hours fishing in soaking wet jeans and boots and had to remove my jacket which was also soaked. By the end of the day I was skunked and my partner had only caught 2 sheepsheads. The final count, only 4 out of 18 boats brought in fish, the first place had only 12 pounds of fish.

I have always dreamed of doing something like this and I am glad I did it, but realized that this is not my cup of tea. I am too old and out of shape to do this. Plus I have been running a boat for 10 years and this is the first time I have been this scared. I will never take my boat out in conditions that rough. Thank God I don't get seasick.

Even though I would not do it again I urge any woman who would like to try it go ahead. It was a very educational experience. If I was 20 years younger I would do it again.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
