Whitefish Lake info

Recommended Posts

Looks like I will be making a trip to Whitefish lake this June with my dad and some friends. I have never been there but from what I have found the perch and walleye fishing look pretty good along with some smallmouth and northern. I am looking for any info as to fishing techniques and general areas to try. Any help would be great!

I haven't been on Whitefish for 8-10 years, but did fish it a bunch of times prior to that. Walleyes were always good. We would get some nice perch also. Northerns ran small and not many of them. Bass were very rare. The lake is mainly a large weed flat that is 6-8 ft. deep. There are some areas that are deeper, but we never did much good there. Our bait of choice was an 1/8 oz. orange jig head with a 3" white twister tail. No live bait. Go out and drift along throwing that. Start with a steady retrieve, keeping the lure above the weeds. If they don't go on that try to hop it along as you retrieve it, again keeping it above the weeds. That's about all we ever did and we caught piles of walleyes, from 8-12" throwbacks on up to 30". My cousin still goes up. Some days he goes out as the sun is setting and fishes all night. I think he uses a lot of rapalas throwing them and retrieving much the same as we do with the twisters. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Lot of fun times on that lake!
