Line Advice

Recommended Posts

I was looking for advice on what types of line that people use and # test for Salmon fishing? I had 20# Silver Thread on my reels and never had any issues with it at all.. Now that it has come time to respool I cant find it... Does anyone have any recommendations and suggestions on what they use...???

Give me some advice on why... say Mono over Fluorocarbon... vs Copolymer.. etc... I had copolymer on and it was flawless... is there some reason I shouldn't try it again... Silver Thread vs P-Line...etc..

Thanks... all imput is appreciated...

Are you looking at tecnique specific line applications or just for rigger rods, board lines, snap weight lines ect? For my rigs I have found that the Berkley big game is pretty economical in the 20-30# test range and I have had decent luck with it as far a durability. I use the 20# on a couple of my rigger rods but tend to go with power pro or Suffix for my dypsie lines and a combination of BG backing, power pro/suffix/leadcore and fluro for boardlines while still having somestraight mono snap weight rigs.

Silver Thread is till out there and I really do like it. Although I have Berkley Big Game or Suffix 20# mono on my salmon rigs currently for downriggers. Both are pretty tough and affordable and I've never broke off a fish using either. I run wire or braid on my dipsey rods.

A lot of it has to do with personal preference, what kind of set-up, as mentioned above, price, durability, the type of salmon fishing you're actually doing, and experience level of who is handling the rod, and what kind of rod it is all has some factor into too.

I like braided on most everything, but I can see why I others wouldn't use it based on their fishing ability and what type of fishing they're doing.

    • I've been posting on here since Feb. 4, 2002 - since the days of the Great Red Lake Crappie Boom.  I met several of the members on here in person back then, but most of them are gone now.   Big Dave has me beat by one day, and Del is a relative newby in that respect, but he's the only real "old-timer" on here....😊
    • A 12v camera with light available from Tomtop out of China $70 with 65 ft cable on reel. Its color HD resolution 1000tvl better than 720p used by Marcum & Aquavu HD units. (Except latest Marcum 1020p latest camera $650). Only drawback, it takes 20 to 30 days and $6 shiping. Link to Tomtop camera. They off a lot of camera options so you may want to da a bit of searching. https://m.tomtop.com/p-y3578-15.html?currency=USD&Warehouse=CN&aid=gplausyly&mid=10000018477&utm_source=SEM&utm_medium=Google Adwords&utm_campaign=TT_PLA_YLY&utm_content=2945&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxs3gBRDGARIsAO4tqq3wBcNnVRFIUf2QknDLs18FF6NrhJ9raJW9BAdaowvDD1gw08q_abwaAilBEALw_wcB Pic simple wire diagram. • Looking fabulistic grainbelt!! How long did you let em swim in the marinade anyhow??
    • Great advice and sounds like you have had some great times on the great Upper Red Lake!  The difference on Red from having a good day to a great day can be as much as moving 20 feet away!  From what you explain I would try to befriend a local or rent an ice auger and bring with the cold gear.  Rent your house like you are and then throw the auger in the car and explore or just pop holes in the area of your house so you can get out enjoy the uniqueness of fishing outside and your chances for landing more fish increases greatly opposed to hard house fishing.  Good Luck!!
