Fall Fishing Fun

PIERRE, SD - For many of us, fall means blaze orange, the rush of a rooster busting out of cover or the thrill of a deer hunt. Those ingrained thoughts of hunting season are great and all, but fall is also an AWESOME time to enjoy fishing with your family.

Cooler weather brings all species of fish back to shallower water, which means fishing from the shore or a dock can be fast and furious. Kid friendly species like bluegills, perch and crappies are willing and ready to strap on the ol’ feedbag in preparation for a long South Dakota winter.

As always, when fishing with kids, keep it simple. Bobbers, plain hooks, split shot weights and minnows or worms make excellent, easy choices.

Look for the edges of weed beds or areas close to deep water. Docks or fishing piers are always great choices and offer places for fish to hide.

Don’t know where to go? Use SD GFP’s shorefishing access map to find areas close to you that have public shorefishing access.

Bring a camera along to capture the moment, because often even the smallest fish can provide the biggest smiles.
