So I have 3 bait stations going all 3 getting hit, with this heat the last two times its been more at night I have a big variety of bait meat to donuts and been baiting late morning and putting out 2 5 gal pails out every other day. I usually spray 2-3 scents in area . My question is what suggestions to get them to come out more in day OR attract more bear to get competition going from what I can tell only one bear hitting each one.

Bait less frequently?

Use different scent?

Different less baits?

Time of day baiting?

Thanks any suggestions that have worked for you appreciate it.

I think everyone's baits will slow down during this heat. More hits are going to be at night with warmer day temps. Don't think there is much you can do, but don't feel to bad because we will all be in the same boat. Just checked the weather and its for cooler temps next week.

Heat is major! Big boars have a ton, well a quarter ton of blubber hanging on them right now. Heat will drive them nocturnal faster then anything else. One trick that does work is take away his food for a day or two and replace it with another bears scat. That ticks em off.

Stay the course Jay, heat drives em' to cooler temps in the night, ya might start to see them feed early morn possibly. cut back some, i'd say but its not gonna make a difference, he ll i dont like to eat in this heat either. I havent even been hit yet so your far better off than me, It will cool down.

Thanks guys, between night hits and cpl sites getting hit every other time thought maybe I should switch things up... One site has been hit all 3 times, other two twice. Just hope for cool temps I'm on vac all the first week, so have time.

Thanks

I too am on the heat = bad bandwagon, but I recently read a study done by a specialist at a bear center who wrote that bears do not get less active with heat. He basically ran down a Mythbusters style paragraph on it, with some data to back it. I would say that I would never agree with it, after watching bears disappear with heat or go nocturnal MANY time over the years. However, this year, our best day was today... 94 degrees. Hits were all midday, and one group was in a station 3 different times during the day, including the 2-3 hour, which is extremely warm. Weird.

Jonny's advice on scat is the best there is IMO. It seems to work better than anything else, aside from an alarm radio, which takes a lot of discipline and baiting every day, early. Could try running a burn while you're baiting to increase curiosity and get more scent floating around. Sounds like you just need to keep at 'er, and see where the cards fall....

I thought it was weird too, as it was like 94 degrees around 3pm today. But... they've lived with this heat all summer.

Berries were terrible this year, acorns are few and far between, as we have very few oaks, aside from young scrub oak. Hazelnuts are far from ready. Rosehips, chokes, etc... aren't standing out to me. Pretty great year to be a bear hunter as far as food goes, IMO!
