iPod touch screen cracked

I cracked my iPod touch screen today and was looking online on where to get it fixed and I guess some people brought theirs to apple and they got it replaced for free. I thought user damage wasn't covered by the warranty? Anybody get theirs replaced for free?

Also, is there any place to get it fixed that is cheaper than Apple's said $99 replacement fee?

My screen is cracked too but it still works, so I haven't had the urge to fix it yet....... figure I can drop it one more time, then it should be finished

The big auction site has repair kits for IPods, I've had mine apart and it's pretty easy to do, I recommend getting the toolkit they make to do this, if you want to attempt to fix it yourself.

I watched a video on replacing the screen yourself, I would rather have it done elsewhere as I don't have a heat gun and I don't want to chance wrecking the 'wifi antenna'

I replaced the screen on my son's G2. I was harder then yours and still very doable. I would do it myself, or just pay Apple. Might check with Micro Center, or Best Buy.

I personally don't/won't carry a fruity (apple) device, but I have plenty of friends and family that do and I keep hearing great things about a place down near the U of M campus called GopherMods - good / fast / warrantied and relatively cheap. Just good the name it'll pop up first result.
