Release - Hook or Regular?

I need to get new release this yr and what can you tell me about the hook release versus the regular clamp down release? I am leaning towards the hook release but just want to hear what everyone has to say about the good/bad/ugly of it.

My dad has punched himself in the face a few times using a hook style release. Still uses it though. :P

I use a Fletcher 3D Hunter release, which is a clamp style. I have a cheap backup release that is also a clamp style.

I have the Tru-Fire Hardcore Buckle Fold-Back Release. It has a lockable length adjustment and a fold-back buckle which is nice when climbing a deerstand. ALso it has less friction since it just one hook, and doesnt seem to rub or catch on a side of one of the clamps. the downside is the price $100! I love mine. i feel i have tighter groups and dont punch the trigger as much.

I"m not sure why people think a hook style release is somehow less secure. Once you put tension on it there is no way the string is coming off the hook. I guess if you tried to twist the release around or something.

I've been using a Tru-fire hook release for two years and never had a single issue. A hook release functions exactly as a caliper, but is easier to load on the string. If you punch yourself in the face then you didn't get the string on the hook, in ehich case, thats not the releases fault, thats operator error. You wouldn't try to shoot a caliper release without making sure its inside the jams would you?
