Winter Wheat/ Rye??

What would be the recommended time to plant winter wheat and rye in central MN. I just sprayed round up on the plots last week. Should I get it in before Labor Day?

We plant a variety of food plots but when we plant winter rye we plant it last week of august at the earliest... The stuff comes up QUICK if it rains overnight after planting you can go out there the next day and see the layer of red tinge of the new growth

As Jason says, it comes up quick. If I remember correctly, I planted it around September 10th last year and I had deer eating on it the first time I hunted it, which was within a few weeks. If you get some rain, it pops real fast.

I was thinking about combining it with something else this year but wasn't sure what. I wonder if it's good to use in combination or should it be by itself? I am trying to have food available for as much of the season as I can but am limited to two fairly small plots.

Just plowed my plot last weekend and will prep it more this weekend and then look to plant ww and other things here on the 25th.

You can easily add brassicas to a winter rye/oat field... The rye is an excellent cover crop and gets hit hard right away while the brassicas mature

I planted a winter rye plot on Labor day weekend and in 1 week it was already 3" tall and looking great.

How tall would you expect the rye to grow if the deer don't mow it down too much?

Yes, it continues to grow until 33 degrees. It will also be the first green plant in the spring that the deer will find. This summer the rye was chest high before it ripened and reseeded itself.

I heard from my Dad that the plots I seeded Labor Day are hardly even doing anything. I guess that happens with no rain.
