Weed Lines

You can see them on your locator. Just motor from deep to shallow and when you start to see weeds, check your depth. The weed line is going to be just a hair deeper for the weed free zone. Might still hit some stranglers and it may vary somewhat depending on weed type.

It is caused by light penetration into the water. Weeds need sunlight to grow so they stop when the light no longer reaches the bottom. Also changes in bottom type like soft to hard will effect the growth.

If you have a Humminbird locator gps with a Lakemaster map chip you can set the zone to show a depth range and then follow that range while fishing. Best spots are those with any changes like pockets, inside corners, points, etc.

Like already posted, motor back and forth, when the bottom of your finder gets real long and stringy lookin you'v found weeds, motor back and forth, in and out of the weed bed until you understand where the edge is, then fish it.

What if you only have a handheld gps, do you just look for depth changes and holes?

Weedlines in any lake tend to all end at the same depth. You can figure this out by trying to "catch" weeds at varying depths. When you figure that depth, assume the weedline is very near that.
