I was on a lake yesterday smaller than 1000 acres max 30' deep water temperature 68F. The crappies were spawning and the northerns were active in 12' of water. We kept two 23" northerns for dinner. One northern was full of spawn. I thought they spawned basically at ice out. Any explanation for this?

Hiya -

Fish may just not have spawned. Weather, water conditions, habitat availability relative to population density...any number of reasons why fish may just not spawn during a given year. A lot of times it's weather - water warms too fast, or water temp goes up and down too often, and fish just give up. They eventually reabsorb the unspawned eggs.

Cheers,

RK
