Stadium Vote

We could fill this thread in 2.2 seconds with reasons why differing political agendas and bill tack-ons could kill the stadium vote come Monday, but I can't stomach any more negativity and nay-saying. Can anyone give me some encouraging theories or convince me that the vote could be yes? What would have to happen between now and Monday to get a stadium built as of today's news that it will be put to an up and down vote? Is there any hope?

There's always hope, but then again there is also always a chance that I'll see a bigfoot riding a unicorn on my way home from work today.

I think in the end it will get done but everoyne is trying to use the stadium bill to get leverage in other areas. Once they see how far they can push things I think they'll end up passing it but everone needs to see how much leverage they can gain through this.

As long as the GOP doesn't come up with yet another last second proposal that won't work we might start making some head way.

if anyone cares they should contact their state reps immediately

ive been told by mine that everyone wants to pay for it from gambling revenues (thus no raising taxes or general fund $$) but nobody can come to a consenus on exactly what gambling will work or actually generate enuff $$ to actually cover the states portion. its all political b.s. between pull tabs, racino, and casino lobbyists....basically back to square one on how to pay for states portion & Reps are just fighting over how to try and pay for it with no single winning idea

im thinking in order to keep this vote from being waaay to close, Dayton needs to start calling his Dem buddies and making deals so Reps votes would then not be as big of a deal, 50/50 party line split will make it a very hairy vote.

I think it will all get done in the end, everyone just wants more back scratching respectively

I think the bill will pass by 1 or 2 votes. Neither party wants to take the blame for the team leaving. We all knew the whole time that the stadium vote would be the last of the session. Once the final vote is make everyone will get the heck out of St. Paul. Won't it be nice not to hear anymore stadium political talk? Could be all over in as few as 2 days.

I've contacted my rep. and senator and both replied. My Rep is uncommitted and Senator is against any stadium bill. I will be watching for how my rep votes.

I have emailed my Senator once, my rep 2x. Unfortunately, my rep is one of the 7 that voted against it and killed it a couple of weeks ago. He has not replied to either one of my emails. But, I am at least trying to do my part and I would strongly encourage anyone that wants to keep the team to do the same. I try to stay out of politics at all costs, but I told my rep that I would make sure to remember him in November if he voted no again.

You are oding your part. We are not a democratic society as most think, but rather a representative society... ie: we elect citizens to 'represent' US in govt. decisions! So if they are only voting their conscious and not what those they represent want, vote them out.

Good Luck!

Ken

Same Rep here. He answered one of my e-mails earlier in the session about not wanting to use tax money for a stadium.

Well it looks like he voted no again. Maybe he doesn't plan on running for re election. grin

The bill that passed the house requires the Vikings ownership to pay quite a bit more for thier share and also takes away some of thier funds for the naming rights.

With the changes to the bill not in favor for the ownership, the Senate could pass this bill as is but I wonder if the onwers would even go for it with the latest changes.

Hopefully the Senate can try to get back to a proposal that the ownership will accept and then vote that through.

I question that Ziggy and company will pay another 100 million for thier cost for the stadium but I guess who knows.

A bill that will not work for the owners is a waste of time.

Sounds like that $105 Million dollar number will have a chance to be negotiated before any final approval so its not a for sure deal breaker just yet.

I still think its stupid that it was added in. An agreement was reached, now is not the time to start making huge changes to it. Sounds like a lot of other ridiculous ammendments where thrown out after differnt representatives tried adding them in. One particulairy stupid one would manadate that every vikings game be broadcast on public tv. Apparently the author of that amendment heard rumors of a NFL cable network starting up soon that would take all the games off network tv. I guess they didn't do their homework enough to realize that the NFL network started in like 2003.

Well Kelly, I probably made him mad at me in my last email. I told him that I thought way too many of our politicians were showing too much petty, partisan politics and were showing an extreme lack of maturity when their party didn't get their way. My last question to him was if he was going to vote for what his constituents wanted or if he was going to "pack up his toys and go home". Apparently he wants to go home. Let's all remember that come re-election time.

It probably depended on which e-mail got there first your's or mine. Mine said something like.

and that the citizens of MN elect people to lead and to get things done rather then fight like little kids in the sandbox fighting over the red truck.

I encourage all you big government tube jockeys to write your own personal checks to ziggy. Ones that don't say "State of Minnesota" on them. That should get you your stadium pretty quick.

So you want me to pay for your television entertainment? If this is the kind of stuff that is deemed necessary by the voters then we really have no chance in balancing our state and federal budgets.

You know James, we beat this subject to death in another thread about 2 weeks ago. Unless you are gambling or heading to downtown Minneapolis to dine, it doesn't affect you. If you don't want to support it, don't buy these things, it won't cost you a cent. Fair enough?

If it doesn't effect us up here then why is your side trying to garner the support of my state representatives? You would think it would be a city or county issue. I think your side has beat these stadium issues into the ground a long time ago. We're tired of giving you never ending handouts.

I personally have no issue with going to the metro to go to a game. I also wouldn't have an issue to spend a few bucks on some pull tabs for the same reason. If I go downtown, I am prepared to spend the few extra cents in sales tax on a beer or a dinner to fund entertainment. Again-if you don't want to support it-don't. All of these things are personal choices. It won't cost you a cent to avoid them. Your arguement is just as all wet as the guy that figured that the stadium dollars would be better spent helping people with their mortgages. Cause this would help our economy how? The jobs that it will create, the unemployment that it will help alleviate, as well as the economic impact of the events held there WILL PAY FOR IT. The players income tax alone will pay for over half of the state's portion. If they leave, the money and the jobs will leave with them.

What do you mean by "YOUR SIDE"? What handouts have "YOU" give my side? Does me supporting the stadium proposal automatically lump me into some group of people that you deem less desirable or something?

To stick with your terms "my side and your side", I guess my side is looking for support across the state because represenatives from all over the state are required to vote on it. Thats just the way things are done. Its not a my side or your side thing, its just the process.

A city or county can't pass a stadium bill, that's why support is needed from representatives around the state and none of the handout is coming from you or the people of Grand Marais unless you choose to. There are plenty of so called handouts in your neck of the woods also and much of that money comes from taxpayers in the Twin Cities area. This isn't going to cost you a dime and it will bring money into the state to offset the cost.

...and how is it that YOU are paying for my tv entertainment?

If all of the stadium funds are being derived from Vikings fans then why is the state involved? Ziggy could quadruple the price of tickets and merchandise and have a new stadium without government getting involved. I don't believe you guys are being very honest about the funding for this whole thing. There seems to be a lot of funding ideas floating around at the moment and not all of them are directed at football fans. You guys really do believe that government exsists to fund or assist sports teams and racinos instead of protecting freedom. I guess stealing is ok if it helps your Vikings.
