I recently installed a humminbird 788 hd di or someting close to that. The problem I am having is that when I start the engine the screen locks up. Do I need to power it off of one another power source or what can I do to correct it?

Sounds like a weak battery, bad connections or a starter motor that's drawing too much current. Clean the posts and terminals and see if that helps. If it's an old battery, it might be time to replace it.
