Kinda disgusted

This past weekend me and the father-in-law were doing a little grouse hunting up near Barnum where we have our deer hunting cabin and a bunch of land. After walking around for more than a few hours and only seeing a few flushes, we decided to take a walk down to the Black Hoof river.

He had told me about an old tool shed used by the railroad WAYYY back in the day that was at the end of a trail. Upon going down this trail(which runs along a fairly major road up there) we noticed something on the hill that leads up to the road. He says to me, "Hey look up there, I think that is a deer carcass, must of gotten hit by a car." Then after seeing that we notice several deer legs on the ground a little further down the trail.

So we go back up the trail to the deer carcass and see that, sure enough, there is a deer tag still attached to the carcass. THEN, a little further up the hill from that is ANOTHER deer carcass. We proceeded to go up and find the name of the person who the deer had belonged to. We also found that the 2 carcasses must have been small bucks, because the antlers had been removed before they were discarded.

We were very torn on what to do next. We could of called the authorities about this, or we could do nothing. But the idea that we came up with was to actually take the tag from the deer and put it in an envelope with a short letter asking the hunter to think about where he puts his carcasses next time.

I can't believe that someone would even take the time to dump these at this spot instead of putting them in the Hides for Habitat that is located not 10 miles from this spot. What would of you all done had you come across this same situation?

if the horns had been sawed off and the rest of the two deer were just left there in my opinion the local CO should have been notified and shown the carcasses and given the tags. that would be my take on it. it is nothing more than deliberate waste of a game animal. i'm not trying to critizise your decision to notify the offender, you did what you thought was right. however i dont think a letter will do much for this kind of behaviour. good luck.

Was the meat on or off ? Off I assume ? Sounds like there was more than just the hides for habitat, the heads, bone, etc. Almost yearly with exception to this year, my approach is a dumping ground for deer parts. Out of sight out of mind for these guys. It's like throw it someplace else, but not on the land we hunt for some reason.

I would have called the CO. Chances are these guys weren't doing something they were supposed to be doing. bunch of dead deer, dumped on someone's land, tag still attached. Idiots if you ask me. I'd bet they also have a freezer full of meet and no registration tags. I'd still call him in.

I think you handled it very professionally.

People I think are misled hear thinking it was a full deer just missing the antlers.

I THINK the OP is stating that they just dicarded the remains of a deer there. No need to infor the CO and possible getting someone in trouble over something they maybe didn't understand themselves

OR maybe a wild animal had carried the remains to that location.

You very much did the right thing and maybe they will discard their remains better next time!

Sounds to me like they did a lot better than a lot of slobs do. At least they got the carcasses away from the main roads and didn't leave a bunch of plastic bags with the bones and hides like a few I have seen this year already. I really don't see the issue with it if all of the trash was picked up and the usable meat taken. Was this public land? If it's private land what they did is perfectly legal.

Assuming you're talking about an entire carcass, you do realize that's not what the Hides for Habitat boxes are for, right? They're only for hides. No bones, no meat, no nothing. Only hides.

If they left their tags on, I have an issue with that. Take your site tags off! If they dumped them off the roadway, down a trail, and left legs, head, and the spine/rib cage; they will be gone in a week. Wolves, 'yotes, and every opportunistic feeder in the woods will take care of it. It's not fun finding a deer carcass, but it's going to happen.

Here is what we actually found....The hides of 2 deer, the rib cages of both deer(that were further down the hill from the 2 hides). Both heads of the deer and 8 legs. The ONLY reason we did not contact the CO was because we felt that maybe he did not know the laws(which I know is like saying someone who robs your maybe didn't know it was wrong...apples to oranges). Plus yes, we also felt that the scavengers would take care of things pretty quick(It already looked like the bones had been picked pretty clean).

Jameson, sorry you felt I was ranting about it. Being sarcastic about it does nothing really. I was just asking what others would of done in my situation because maybe I feel I did not do enough. If you feel I should of done it another way, please feel free to say. Besides, what are internet boards for? Ranting and opinions. Both of which I gave. wink

Couldnt have lived far away, pick up the remains look him up in the phone book an toss it on his lawn. But that wouldnt accomplish much would it. Nothing wrong with letting nature take its course, it dont take long, but it is frustrating to find it on ur land that u didnt put there.

Born2Fish, you mentioned sending the person a letter. I actually think that is a good idea. I too do not like finding the leftover bones and such from butchered deer left on public land. By sending the letter yourself it might stick with the person that other hunters do actually care about the issue and not just some CO.

I guess I'm not sure what the problem is ( apparently that's littering maybe, not sure?) Its just the unusable carcass all off wich will be eaten by something. Whats the problem, do you put your gut pile in a bucket and bring it with you... of course not I would say they should have been placed off a trail deeper out of the way in woods and tag taken off but its feeding other animals better than wasted In a dumpster, that's just my opinion though, I'm not big on wasting things.

i'm not big on wasting things either and understand you point of view. however here is the law.

Hunters who process their own deer may not dispose of carcasses on public land, including wildlife management areas, state forestes, road rights of way or in any water body. deer carcasses may be disposed of in the following ways:

on private land with the permission of the landowner.

through your refuse hauler after checking on how to properly bag the carcass.

at a local landfill.

so it's a littering law basicly. i think the law is good. there has to be some kind of guidline or the stuff could get thrown anywhere. good luck.

All my remains go to the woods off the road. it feeds many different wildlife and I would rather see the criiters be able to use it other thasn filling the landfill.

With that said, I dump mine on private property. I also have a friend who wants then from me to throw in his woods to attract yotes so he can shoot them.

I guess if someone dumped them on our place, I really would not care as they yotes would have them drug of in the woods and eaten probably before I even saw them if they were dumped in the evening but that is me.

Not saying all should feel that way is ok I guess I simply do not mind.

This fall, like all others, we always find a dead deer that was not picked up or found. That's what bothers me.

My son found a nice wide 8pt buck and I found 2 very large adult does shot and left for whatever reason. If I would have found them sooner, I would have cut the straps off for sure but the yotes beat me to it. Now that is a waste.

I'm not questioning the iegality, there are a lot of laws that are just stupid, and a lot of laws people break every day...when's last time you or I drove over 70 mph, made illegal turn used your cell in your car, threw cigarette out car window these are all illegal but we do.. Just saying things we all do every day that's illegal. I think its like pot calling kettle black at times how people can judge others, but follow rules they want too, really not hurting anything like I said could dispose of it off a trail but its helping feed critters. I'm not nieve enough to say that's why they were dumped there, I'm sure they were because of shear ease and laziness but let's be honest not hurting anything or anyone.

I purposely don't throw mine in the garbage. This year I walked directly past my empty garbage can and hauled 2 carcasses out into the woods behind the house 100 yards away. The critters can get the meat and minerals from the bones, use the hair for nests, etc. Now if a yote or a dog picks up a leg and brings it who knows where, then God only knows where it will end up.

Overall, the parts shouldn't have been put on public land "per the law", but they did end up in a good place where they will be put to use. Just look the other way when you walk past it.
