Honey/bacon burns

Boar

Recommended Posts

Aint ready to pull out the last resort yet, the bear on my barrel are inconsistant an not hitting it to hard, tells me thier still on acorns but keeping an eye on the barrel. Hopefully soon they be on a more cosistant basis, cooler temps an the only resturant in town. Ive touched on burns before, but still like hearing what you guys do every year. Its afavorite trick for me but only like to use it as a last resort. Baocn or honey an how do ya like to build ur burners. Jerkbait has a great method for a burner so hope ya chime in, ya told me once an forgot. Later boar

We use a tin pie pan (i am guessing you have one or 2 laying around) and heat it up with the smaller catering sternos cans. They are plenty hot enough to get the smoke rolling, and burn for an hour. We use an old camp stove grate between the sternos and the pie pan, the grate is the same size as the pie pan. Hope that helps. Curious to read what others do...

We dig a small hole just big enough for the sterno can to fit in and then take 2 6-8 inch pieces of rebar and put on the sides of the sterno can. Then we put whatever we want to burn in a tin coffee can and put that on top of the rebar. It works great.

I've had better luck cooking strawberry jam. Bacon is a foreign smell to most bears.

Build a small shelf on the side of a tree about 6 feet off the ground. Make a stove out of a big coffee can. Cut a hole the size of a sterno can in the side. About 2/3 of the way up the side of the can drill a few holes so you can run some rods through the can to serve as a grate. Take a 2 lb coffee can and add a large jar of jelly, a packet of strawberry jello and a cup of water.

I used to have my burner on the ground but the smell doesn't go as far. Also had a bear burn his nose on the can!

Several years ago I did a honey burn and a burn another night using Big Paw from Bear Scents- Wow did that Big Paw smell incredible and lasted forever bubbling away. I used the 5 lb coffee can with the 2 lb can inside of it supported over close hanger wire with the sterno- small cans. Try the Big Paw sometime. A can should last a quite a while if only doing an occasional burn.

Good Luck

Here ya go Boar. I learned this from a friend. Take a metal coffee can and drill the sides full of holes, like swiss cheese it. I use 2 big sternos then, only one needs to be full, the other is to stack the full one on. Stack the 2 sternos, light the top one, then take the coffee can and turn it upside down over the sternos. Then i use a small soup can or pop can with the top cut off and put the honey in there. When you are putting the honey in the can drip some down the sides to get the going faster. The honey will start to bubble over the top of the can the drip down on to the hot coffee can. No need to worry about it dripping into the sterno and puttin it out. Hope that makes sense.

I will need to try a bacon burn with this stile. The one I did last year was with the can right side up and that didn't go so good.

Do not try this one unless you are a trained professional! wink My first attempt to do a honey burn about 20 years ago went like this. Mr cooker with a coffee can on top of it. Anyone want to fill in the rest! eeklaugh

Oldendays, no matter if ya do one or not,one thing to remeber is when he shows, ya really need to try an relax an put your heart back in your chest, let him come in an get comfy, let him do his thing an dig around move the logs ext. this will give you time to get your heart rate back downand relax an not rush the shot. No need to hurry. Good luck bud. later boar
