My dog just swallowed a 4 to 6 inch long piece of 1.5 inch diameter rolled up rawhide. Should I be worried, or will it break down and pass?

Should be ok. Watch for normal duece movements. To the the vet if you see difficulty passing a duece or dry heaves.

Should be OK but thats the reason I quit giving rawhides, see thread below about raw bones to chew on, much better for the dog.

My daughter pulled a 8 inch piece of quarter inch rope outa our dogs butt, amazine what can go thru them.

Yeah Todd. Thats the last one. We had been giving him rawhide chips but after having to reach down is throat to unlodge one Thos went in the trash. We bought one of the rolled up ones to see if he would chew it and not swallow. We were wrong. Now he can just eat his toys.

If one is going to use real bones, do not use bones out of a round steak. I am talking the totally round ones. One of my house dogs got one lodged around his lower jaw and I could not get it removed. One part of the round bone got over her eye or canine teeth and it lodged in her mouth, it would not move and she would not let me touch the jaw or bone.

A trip to the vet and a giggly wire and he cut it off. My Vet said he has seen many people use these bones and this does happen more than one might think.

good point harvey. it's amazing what people have asked me for bones for over many years when i was working. the only bone i would recommend for your dog is a marrow bone, center cut that is at least 6 to 8 inches long. they are durable and will last for a long time. also cook it first to take away any hint of blood. my dogs used to chew on one for 2 to 3 years. never give them chicken or pork bones or beef neck bones. my neighbors dog died of suffocation by swallowing a turkey neck bone. not doing the animal any favors with that even with good intentions. good luck.

LOL, several of our friends feed a raw diet to their dogs, and turkey necks are a daily thing for them.

I had a Yellow Lab that ate and passed not one but 2 popsicle sticks without any problems at all. Talk about a very nervous person the first time that it happened. I thought I would let him have the last of a ice cream bar, as I went to regrip he swallowed the whole thing. Called the Vet and they said to just watch for it to pass in the next few days. And it did.
