muddpuppy
I think it's comming from the drive axel. This knocking/pounding feel comes and goes but is gradually getting worse. This is on a 07 impala, I have brought it into a couple place to have it diagnosed but of course it does not make the noise. I am told the front end is tight. Just did a alignment and rotated and balanced the wheels. The Intermediate steering shaft is making noise but I don't think it is the cause of the knocking sound as I cant feel it in the wheel. So my question is If the front end iis tight and everything looks and sounds normal. Where should I start replacing parts? ISS or Drive Axle. Wheel bearrings are new like 6,000mi
pureinsanity
bring your car to a car wash and get all the crud out of the wheels. perhaps something is causing something to be out of balance and knock. I am having a brain fart but I've had this happen on someones car before and cant remember the fix give me a bit
Macgyver55
Is this a rythmic sound or random? With the condition of the roads, and a random sound I'd be looking at stabilizer links, struts, ball joints and control arm bushings real close, but a worn steering rack isnt out of the question either. muddpuppy
It is a rythmic dadadadaadadaadada like with the wheel speed when it occurs. sometimes it's loud and hard other times quite and soft. normally at lower speeds it's loud and hyway speeds quite

zamboni
My dads Avalanche does this, he was told the grease they use at the base of the steering column dries up and clunks.
muddpuppy
Do bumps make a difference? Hard to tell there are bumps every 5 feet this time of the year. I would have to say yes though. I took the car into an empty lot and drove circles slow fast swerviving and ther are the clunks from the ISS but it is hard to make the car make the thuds DADADADADAD noise. I will have to put this thing in the air pull the tires and give everything a good yank. maybe give the tire a spin and see if I can feel/hear anything. Jeremy airjer W
While in the abandoned parking lot drive in a straight line as slow as idle will get you going. Violently rock the steering wheel back and forth to get the whole car rocking from side to side. If you hear it than its one of three things. Stabilizer links, stabilizer bar bushings, Broken stabilizer bar, or the puck style lower control arm bushings. Its the first thing I do when diagnosing front end noises and its fairly accurate. muddpuppy
Thanks all for the help... odd as it may sound...I did as Airjer said and herd felt nothing. Actually the more I swerved around the last couple day the noise went away. UNTIL this afternoon I hit a big hole in the road and bangbangbang. Driver side wheelhub was shot and the passenger side almost shot. I was luckly to near a quality shop when this happened. I guess the saying Buy Cheap get Cheap is in order. Lesson learned!
