Coyotes getting out of hand!

Recommended Posts

I had a visit on the wild side tonight with a coyote pack coming right through the yard and into the shed to steal a laying hen and kill a turkey dragging it off several hundered yards.

I was first alerted by one of my hens cackling just outside my bedroom window about 11 pm. I tracked the feathers and paw prints out and found the dead hen buried in a snow drift 1/4 mile away. 4 white guinea fowl missing as well, presumed dead. Others were scattered in the trees and on top the house trying to escape the carnage.

When I went out to retrieve the turkey carcass, the coyotes stayed out a ways screaming, barking, and howling at me as I headed back to the house! I sat in the garage with my rifle for an hour, but they did not come back. I have been here 10 years and never had coyotes come in the yard. Coons, cats, skunks, and possum, but never coyotes.

i believe that would be illegal to set traps around a carcass that is visable due to eagles, hawks and other protected game from getting caught in the traps. I'm sure there are plenty of people that coyote hunt around you that could help you out. If there is a specific trail where the coyotes go under the fence a snare would be a good setup.

I have been watching this winter, and only once or twice did a coyote cross my land so regular fence crossing aren't visible. They came into the yard by way of open field between my neighbor's house and mine. They buried the chicken within 20 yards of his back yard, and tried to carry the chicken the opposite direction across the road where I had them screaming and barking last night. The only tracks near my house all winter were last night after 8 pm, but I bet the'll come back now. Unfortunetly my shed does not close up, so I can't lock them out either. I will try calling them in tonight and see if I can have any luck. I might even hang the dead carcasses out in a tree for enticement and see if that will keep them coming near so I might get a shot. With the feathers blowing in the wind and scent it might help.

You can't sit there forever. Your best bet would be to spend some time and money to tighten up the shed cause if you don't the critters are all going to disappear. Your place is the OCB in your area and they don't need feathers to find it.

If you going to try calling them make sure you set up accordingly. Have the wind crossing you or in your face if possible. Since they caught wiff of your scent last night it would be highly unlikely for them to come in again if they smell you. If you dont have snow camo use a bed sheet to cover up or make sure you have a backdrop away from any light that might come from your house. If your familiar with hand calls or have(borrow) and electronic call i would suggest to start with a lone howl. Wait about 3 to 4 min while scanning for yotes,if they happen to anwser you then try to mimic there howls, barks and so forth. But if you dont get an answer then start with some distress calls. If you have a turkey call just mimic the sound that you were hearing last night. Any distress call should work but since you have turkeys and other game it would be best to stick with that. This is also there breeding season. Coyotes are very teritorial and will most likely challange any other coyote intruder to there pack. Thus coyote vocals will work well during this time also. With this info give it a shot tonight and let us know the outcome.

I checked the birds outside at 1:00 am last night and all was well so I figured I was good to go. When I went out at 7:30 this morning, I was missing a royal turkey hen, a black copper maran hen, and a bantam rooster. On a positive note, one of the 3 missing guinea hens has returned from the dead so I have 5 of the 7 still. Last night I had left the dog outside and went out checking every so often with flashlight to try detering any activity, but obviously they are now determined. I got permission from the farmer across the road to hunt coyotes over there so my brother is going to come with an electronic caller and we are going to give it a try tonight.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
