SD shot laws

Recommended Posts

Ok I think i answered my own question

"Nontoxic Shot is required to hunt small game on most public lands. Lead shot may be used on private lands including private lands leased by GFP as Walk-In Areas. See "Nontoxic Shot" under the General Laws section for more information."

Note that waterfowl hunting is ALWAYS non-toxic except for allowance of Youth to shoot lead during their special season.

So lead OK for pheasant on SD WIA land. This is private land leased by the SD GFP.

So if I am hunting WIA I can use lead unles it is posted otherwise? All other public land is steel only. can any one point me to this rule in the SD hunting regs so i can have it with me.

I would just shoot non tox but i hunt with a Model 12 from the 1920's the non tox for it is $34 a box of 10 ouch !

my best advice is too get one of the hunting handbooks that can be found and just about any outdoors store, walmart or gas stations that sell licenses. Other wise if you go to the SD GFP HSOforum you can pull the map up there

http://gfp.sd.gov/hunting/areas/maps/default.aspx

All of the public walk in areas are colored coded on the maps and that will tell you which ones you can only shoot non toxic on.
