Non Resident Requirements for Children under 16

Recommended Posts

I am hosting a mini-family reunion at a resort near Hayward. None of the adults or children are Wisconsin residents. The 5 children attending are all between 9 and 7 years old and none are my children although two are grandchildren. I plan to take the kids fishing a couple of times during the week we are in WI. I'm not a resident either, but plan to buy a license so I can fish with them. All of the other adults are golfers and you know what they will be doing everyday.

The WI DNR regs say that residents or non-residents over the age of 16 need a license unless they will be smelting or netting fish. It makes no mention of any kind of children 15 years or older needing a license for hook and line fishing. I'm just checking in case someone on FM knows of any other regs that may require a license for a non-resident child.

One other question: These kids love to fish and I'm sure they will be dock fishing. Other adults will be in charge of the kids at differnt times. Is there any reg that requires the supervising non-resident adult to have a licnese if they are not fishing?

My cousins are non-residents who fish without a license even though my uncle/aunt do not have them. So you should be ok. Supervising is just fine. However they cannot touch the rod or make casts for them while they are fishing. I believe they are allowed to handle fish though.

16yrs and older need a nonresident liscense to fish. The younger ones do not need one. There is no mention that supervising adults need a liscense in order for the kids to fish, so it's not required. As long the adults aren't "Fishing" with the kids pole in hand, everything will be good.

I just looked at this yesterday because I was wondering if Lisa's 16 year old son could fish on our Family license. This is copied out of the regs. so there should be no problem if under 16.

Nonresident annual family license—Includes children 16 & 17 years old

(Please Note: Family licenses do not include grandchildren ages 16 &

17 years old).

$65.00
