Blown power head, what to do next?!

Blew my powerhead. 03Merc 150 EFI. Rod in Cyl#1 broke, no oil? What to do next? Dealer i took it to wants 7k for a rebuild, I don't want to go that route any suggestions, recommendations and/or Ideas? HELP! frown

7k is a bit pricey. I would shop around a little bit. I would try Extreme marine in wyoming mn. They are really good. Otherwise you can buy a new 150 opti for under 10k.

If you have your boat insured, check with your insurance comapny as it may be covered as well and will help defray the costs.

I would look into a re-man powerhead. If it was just a broken rod then no it wasnt from no oil, all 6 cylinders would have likely burned up.

what could have caused it? (most common problem on mercs?)

insurance won't cover it..:(

Fatigue is usually the most common cause. Porosity in the rod itself. Hard to say for sure. Depends on where it broke. Middle of the rod or near the ends. Bearing failure causing movement. I'm not saying that no oil wont but unless there are signs of heat or scorching elswhere in the engine, a mechanical failure more than likely took it out.
