New to the Area: Watertown, SD

Recommended Posts

My cousin is moving to the area. We are from Central Minnesota. I was curious how is the fishing on the local lakes around the area of Watertown and North? I have heard a lot of great things from fishing shows like Tony Dean, Midwest Fishing Show, Jason Mitchell. What are some general comments on the fishing? Also, are there any designated muskies lakes out there as well? The comments are appreciated.

I'm not as familiar with the lakes right in the Watertown area as I am with the lakes in the Day/Marshall County area (around Webster/Britton area). There is a lot of good fishing to be had in the area. For muskie, Lynn Lake just northwest of Webster has been managed by GFP as a muskie lake, and muskie have been stocked there. Same with Amsden Dam, southeast of Groton/southwest of Webster. The state record muskie (40 pounds) came out of Amsden sometime in the early '90's.

For bass, try Roy Lake. Panfish are abundant; Enemy Swim would be a good bet for crappie or sunnies. Walleye can be found in many lakes. Watch the mercury advisory for the fish on Bitter Lake (south of Waubay); but the fishing can be good in Bitter Lake. Northerns can be found in a lot of places; Marshall County lakes such as Buffalo and Red Iron can provide particularly good pike fishing.

And you don't have to find the large lakes to find good fishing...some of your best days of fishing will come from some smaller, out of the way lakes. Of course, if you are willing to drive, the fishing on Oahe can be outstanding...

Watertown is excellent area for fishing. Lake Poinsett south of Watertown is full of walleyes. Dry Lake #2 west of Watertown has been good for walleyes for about the last 4 years. Lake Kampeska is also a good lake. Fish are smaller on Kampeska.

You are only 45 miles away from Webster. There is a lot of lakes to fish up there. Waubay and Bitter are good lakes for walleyes.
