Stealing from the pawn shop

I already posted this one a while ago but I still can't get over it. Everybody needs to start exploring deals at neihborhood pawn shops. So far this year I bought a Lms 350a, E trex gps, and today I just brought home somebody elses tackle box for 60 bucks. In todays special I found 28 rapalas. Those alone are over a 100 dollar value. That was the most exciting part. And the reason I bought it. I also found plenty of twister tails with a wide selection of lead head jigs, Enough hooks in every color and size for the rest of my life, plenty of weights in every shape and size, lindy rig components,a new scale and hook remover and a few other things. A buddy and scedule a day about every week or so. We have found really nice reels and locators and plenty of other fishing equipment. My buddy bought a new drill a week ago. In the end he got a 12 volt dewalt drill with two batteries and a charger for 60 bucks. There were just a few scratches and some paint on it. Our favorite shop has return policies so you can make sure you got what you paid for. So if you live a shop, its a good idea to check em out first before buying anything. (especially tools)

I don't want to start an argument, simply want to make an observation.

You older guys remember when there were NO pawn shops? Walker, Onamia, and just about any other small town near a casino will now have pawn shops. I hate to think of what happened to $$ derived by those who trade their watches, tackle boxes, electronics, etc.

I may be out of line here, but If some guy wants to pawn his tackle box to put a few quarters into a slot machine, that's their own fault.
I geuss self-restraint doesn't apply in those cases. As for a rise in crime, that may be true, but that is something I would have to take up with my legislator.

Was thinking more along the lines of people roaming the casino lots and plucking things out of the back of boats and then running down to the pawn shop

It happened to me two years ago, and my boat has never seen a casino either! The boat was right where I agree that it belongs, on the water. In a rented slip at Eddy's on opener weekend. Had $600 of tackle stolen from the boat. I'm sure it went to the pawn shop in Onamia. The deputy that took the police report even told me to check there later in the week. Of course I live in the cities and wasn't up there again soon enough to check it out. Anyhow my homeowners insurance paid off and I got a bowmount trolling motor with the proceeds.

funny you guys should mention that. It crossed mt mind how many pieces of fishing merchandise in the shops are stolen. I've seen a few locators in the stores that didn't come with any cables, just the unit. It makes me wonder. I've heard that you can register electronics, I would think you could register your locators, they got numbers. As for tackle and rods, that would be way to easy for a thief. Flying fish ahd his rods stolen form his boat. I hope I never have to deal with that.

I would recommend no boats at Strip bars either.Alot of people who stop there on the way up often come out to find their rods and other equipment gone. I had a friend who stop at Frontiers(strip club)(very bad for thefts) between Eagle River Wis. and Land of Lakes and he saw a guy watching them with a cell phone(talking), the guy tried to buy them drinks and he ran out of there to find 2 rods gone and a tackle box. Another 10 minutes and all his stuff would have been gone, another guy lost his receiver on his hitch- he didn't find out till the next morniong-same place.Stay away from both the Casino or Strip bar- You are there to fish!

Sorry I got mixed up. I have never taken my boat to the casino with me, so I had no idea that this is a common occurence. Fishhead does have a good point.

There's a program in St. Paul, and I would bet in most other cities as well, called operation ID. It's free and it might help you get some items back if they are ever stolen. I also believe you can get a rate reduction to your homeowners theft coverage by signing up with operation ID. Call your Ins Agent.

Staying out of the casinos is easy. Never been to one. Staying out of the strip joints however might be a little tougher

PS-Has anyone seen my tackle box that got stolen? It has about 20 Rapalas in it, lots of twister tails, enough hooks of all sizes to last someone a lifetime! Oh, and some jig heads!

You know... about the only way to prove a box is yours is to have it marked. If it's a bag like I've got, you could embroider your name on the side. Sure the scum bags could rip the name off, but they're too lazy to do anything like that. I say just be careful where you leave your stuff unlocked, because once it's gone, it's almost impossible to find it, let alone, prove it's yours.

Kind of scary when you start adding it all up. I routinely take pictures of the contents of my tackle box and keep them at work. Maybe that is because I am a parranoid Insurance Agent in my spare time!ScottS

No good person derserves to be ripped off. Lets not support the criminals that have no work ethic and feel the need to have others support them. Mark your belongings and keep all serial numbers. If the pawn shops are selling stolen merchandise, they are no better than the criminal. And most importantly, if you hang out where criminals hang out, you will probably become a victim.
