Popular Post CANOPY SAM
Can't figure out how to turn this image. This big fella walked into my stand tonight. I let a very nice 8-pointer walk yesterday morning, so I'm thinking the good Lord was blessing me with a "little bettter" buck tonight! Praise the Lord for His bountiful provision and blessings! Popular Post umichjesse
Opening weekend was successful. I passed on 6 bucks Saturday, but couldn't say no to a busted up old bruiser Saturday evening. Not wall hanger, but plenty of character and tough to pass broadside at 25 yards. Season was over when a trophy doe walked 5 yards from me Sunday morning. Done too soon! I wish I was still hunting, but two deer is all my family needs this year. The first meal was fantastic, seared one of the doe tenderloins with a wild blueberry and wild mushroom pan sauce. ANYFISH2
Well apparently in one of the area big buck/doe contests the biggest doe so far is 210#s. Second hand info, just passing a rumor. I would have loved to see it myself.

Popular Post chasin_walter20
It started like any typical day at deer camp. Up at 5am to get breakfast ready and fully wake up before heading to the stand. Got to stand well before light and listened to the woods come to life. It was an uneventful day up until that point. A few pheasants and a few crows is all that was moving that morning. On a normal day I usually stay in the stand until 11am and then get down and head in for lunch but on this day something told me to stay a little bit longer. Not sure if it was a higher power at work or just a hunch but something told me stay 15 more minutes. I continued to glass down the east fence as that is where most the deer cross, when I just happen to look to the north pasture and saw a doe running towards me and behind her was this big guy. No idea how big he was at the time but could tell he was a shooter (mature buck). He must have been chasing her pretty hard as the doe had her mouth opened and the buck following closely behind doing the same, letting out a grunt every 5 steps or so. At this point I had my gun up and ready to shoot. they had turned and started heading east towards the tamarack swamp. I tried to yell at him to get him to stop but he only had one thing on his mind! BANG let the first round fly and he kept on running. BANG let the second round go and he kept going. BANG!! he was hit but not very well and turned away from the doe and headed deep into the woods. Im not sure if my heart stopped or if it was beating so fast I couldn't feel a pulse. Looked at my watch and it was 11:11am on 11/11... rather ironic I thought as I started the wait. I knew I wanted to let him lay for awhile especially not being too sure how well he was hit. Around noon I got down from the stand and got on the ATV and headed around the tall grass to the point where he enter the woods. It was a rather wet year and had already got stuck in there the day prior. I drove around to the other side of the woods as it was higher, dry and easy spot to access the woods. I get on his trail and I start seeing blood. Spot here and a spot there so I was excited and nervous at the same point. I look 30 yards in front of me and through the thickest nastiest brush I can see him get up and run off. A few bad words escaped my lips as I was upset with myself for jumping a wounded deer. I wasn't sure how well he was hit but he wasn't looking too healthy and wasn't running the best. Still I knew he could run for miles and miles on adrenaline alone. At this point I knew it was going to be a long and hard track but I had a steady blood trail. wasn't heavy but a spot here and a spot there. Of course as a wounded deer tends to do he runs to the thickest, worst and wettest part of the swamp. Slowly but steady I kept following the blood as I knew I had to get another shot into this deer. After 2.5 hours of following this deer I came to the end of the blood and couldn't find anymore. My heart stopped and sank into my chest! I scan every direction spinning in circles trying not to break down and lose my mind. Then... off in the distance I see this buck lift his head, look around and lay back down. I slowly sneak up on this deer as to not jump him again. Trying to get a better shot as I could only see his head. I step in a deep mud hole up passed my knees and the buck hears and tries to get up and by this time he is 20 yards away so I steady myself and BANG!! shot him again! He was down but still not dead so I walk up on the buck and put two 9mm rounds into him to finish the job. I collapse next to this animal and just admire at the size and mass! It was 2:54pm I was tired, wet, cold, hungry, thirsty, speechless and at a loss for words. I may have won that battle but I knew there was still a lot of work to be done to get him out of here! At this point I had received multiple texts from everyone in my hunting party wondering if I found him or how big he was!! I told everyone that they would have to wait and see for themselves and they would not be disappointed. I had plans in mind as to how I was going to get this animal out of the thickest wettest woods on our property. At this point I was lost myself and not sure where I was. Everything looked so similar and I had left my compass in my bag still on the ATV. So I called for help to get my bearings out of this place. For the next two hours I follow the beep of a car horn while leaving pink tape ribbons on tree's to find my way back to recover this animal after dark. Evening comes and everyone wanted to see this huge animal I had shot but wouldn't give more details than "BIG"!! Four of us set out with ropes, lights and hip boots to drag this big boy out. We take the ATVs down to the field edge until we could go no further. Find the first pink ribbon and off we went into the swamp. Pitch black, dark, wet and windy we follow this trail almost a half mile back to this buck losing our way a few times as it was tough walking. Came upon this animal and every jaw dropped as they couldn't believe what they were looking at. Hugs, high fives, handshakes and congratulations were given before we tried to figure how we were going to get him out of there. We could hardly walk on our own let alone drag this 220lb deer and keep his antlers from catching on everything we pass. 3 hours of pulling, walking, tripping, falling and slipping trying to get him out. Three of us on a long rope switching positions with one in the back to keep his antlers from snagging could only manage 10-15 yards before we needed to stop and catch our breath. We are all soaked from head to tail, falling into the mud and sweating our butts off. We finally get him back to the field edge and into the sled behind the ATV and we all collapse in celebration and I finally have the buck of my dreams!! ozzie, hoppe56307, eyeguy 54 and 5 others

chasin_walter20
Nobody had any history or seen this deer before. we had talked to all the neighbors and farmers and nobody could recall this buck. think he is 4.5 or 5.5. Taxidermist is going to have it aged and scored. but if I had to guess a score I would say around 180" Edited November 16, 2015 by chasin_walter20
