2003 Catfish Gatherings

Recommended Posts

Maybe we should start thinking about where to have a few gatherings.

Working around other events may be a little tough so don't expect to make every one of them. Saturday nights will work the best all around and I think if we figure on 3-4 events, that should be enough to hook up with everybody at least once.

We need to consider a place to stay for out of towners and easy spots to fish for those without boats. This will not be a tournament style schedule but if you feel the need to put in a buck or two for bragging rights...I'm in!

Oh, the foggy river and the sound of thousands of tiny wings around your ears!....Can't wait!

WET NETS!

Last year we made it to Carver and was planning the red gathering but other things came up and time was cut to short to make it. But we are going to try and make as many gatherings as we can this year. Alot of fun and great way to put a face to some of the names. So hope to see alot there.

Sorry Canopy Sam! I spaced out your earlier post about the spring gathering!...Didn't need to start another one I guess.

Anyhoo, Fishhead is thinking of a date for Carver. no_spam is planning one for the Mississippi right?

All I can think of other than those would be something down around Mankato or even further west upstream? Any other ideas are Welcome..

Carver would be nice again but maybe someone could talk to the folks at city hall and get something lined up for us to camp there for that week-end. Or have it up or down river some where. Just a thought.Yet us know when the date is and we'll be there.

How does the 13th and 14th of June sound for the spring gathering?

No Worries Dark! "If you plan it, they will come!"
I really like the idea of having several of these. I'd hoped to make the BP cat league this coming summer, but I don't think I'm gonna have the time.
New water for more cats would be great. I really liked the water we found up by St.Peter! I would think we could find a good spot to set up there for the night and fish from shore...
I'd really like to get back up in Ed's neck of the woods too! Or even farther north yet?

Fistchoice,June 13-14 on the Mississippi sounds good! Being its a friday night it could conflict with our friday night league but I'll be there if not. BTW, Sorry I never got to use my gift certificate last summer....Maybe you can show me around your stretch of the river instead.

Canopy, Pick a date for the St.Peter/Mankato area and we'll do that too! Theres places to camp down that way for any out of towners who want to come cattin'

Dark30,
If you think it would be better we can change it to the 14th and 15th of June.

Sure could show you some stuff on the Miss if you like. There are a lot more cats here then people think.

Any weekend will work for me. I would like to make the Carvre one, but it would be good to have 2 or 3 more some where between sleepyeye and carver. I need to see some new water.

By the way DARK I still have your monkey grin.gif

Ya I still have spankey. It's a good thing he's a fishing monkey and not a hunting monkey!

Only been on the ice for a week and nothing but small fish. Oh well got to do something till the end of may, frist stop hole # 24 good for at least 1 maybe 2 40+ cat's.

Picked up a new Abu Garcia reel it's a 7000c4 LD. The reel has a lever on the side for the drag, This reel is made for the river!!

So when is the frist meeting? Is it time yet haa? Are we there yet? You mean I have to wait till spring!! shocked.gif

I would say it's more like seen the light and was "Born Again" a catman.

You considering that event in Canada? Hope so, if you have any questions give me a buzz and we can work out any complications. It is a good idea to reserve a room early at cat's for that week! I may have 2 extra beds open in our cabin(4 in each room 5 with the couch), not sure yet? Depends on what days you come up. I will be there all the week before and maybe the week after the event too. I will be booking trips for those weeks and also have some media folks popping in.

I'd like to attend one of these catfish gatherings, maybe the one on the Mississippi. I've always enjoyed catfishing from shore either on the Minnesota at Shakopee or by Coon Rapids dam. Do you all fish from shore or off a boat?

I'm game for the carver get together, if i'm welcome?
A couple of buddies and I fish btw leseur and burnsville, mostly cats and eyes, an occasional "river" fish, whatever that may be... Best thing about the river, not sure what it is till it's in the boat! Hopefully i'm in town all summer, I'll try to get out at least once or twice a week. Last summer was in Alaska salmon fishing for 2 months, kind of ruined that cat season.

Hi

I'd be interested in learning more about fishing for cats. I am a newbie to it - don't know much about it.

You guys are more than welcome to show up. Anybody who likes Catfishing or wants to learn more can show up...Its not a tournament style thing.....Just friendly river rat gatherings. We'll be fishing from shore as well as from boats. Last year I think we had anywhere from 5-10 people or so and I think we could grow that a bit.

Hey,
I went back through the posts from last year's Mississippi gathering and noticed references to camping on an island - can we have it somewhere where that's an easy option again this year? My wife would like to join in and a camping trip is just the thing!! Little fire, fish from shore, kids can explore a little....

    • Looks like a good time
    • I love my Helix unit also, and GPS has been a game changer for me. No more fumbling with my phone in the cold with apps eating my battery and trying to keep it out of the elements.    I miss the simplicity of my Marcum VX-1 but after getting my Helix dialed in I have no complaints.
    • SD resident opener was a wet one. Saturday I didn't go out. Sunday morning woke up with 4.5" inches of snow at my place a few miles south of Sioux Falls. Never would I have imagined we would be able to hunt in snow this early! The other odd part is that none of the weather people even hinted at any accumulation or even predicted any chance of precip. It literally just came out of nowhere.   Yesterday I hunted the entire day from noon to sundown and was fortunate enough to still have some snow stick around in areas.. My only summary is swamp country. I wore the wrong boots, wrong pants etc. Should have just wore waders would have been able access things better. My biggest mistake was not going far enough west and not far enough north. But there is a ton of public land where I headed and I hadn't been able to scout that way yet this year. Everything that looked walkable was wet it didnt matter how high or low it was. If it looked good at knee level it very likely had ankle high standing water under it. Ditches were full of water, some roads were underwater it was just wet everywhere and I don't see any signs of any harvesting starting any time soon. The water just made things difficult to walk as some areas I am familiar with. I could walk one side and work it good, but then get land locked because of water and have no way of getting to the other sides and ended up back tracking and walking a lot of same areas twice  which usually isnt productive.   I only managed 1 bird all day. I missed 1 bird my first walk probably at 12:01pm right after getting out of the truck. Just was slow to get the gun up and was way behind it. Typically early season lull, I think I just stared at the bird before I even realized I should be trying to shoot it. I downed another bird early afternoon and I knew it wasn't hit hard. Made a good mark on it and then my dog got a good track and pinned it down. As I went to grab it with my hand the dog released and the bird took off like a bat out of hell and we never were able to recover it because of all of the water. As soon as I put my hand on it, it just exploded and was gone. Was just an odd scenario.   Saw a few other hens but otherwise a very very slow day. I had spotted a bunch of birds coming out of some CRP earlier in the day that headed for corn. I came back an hour before sundown and hunkered down hopefully to get some pokes at them during the golden hour and they never showed up. I know the birds are around but all the crops in makes it difficult to hunt during the day.   I dont know what to suggest for people coming for the big opener this weekend. Its going to be difficult with so many crops in. I would say anywhere north of HWY 14 should be a little drier in areas but they have still seen some moisture the last couple weeks. Up near Brown county they are basically in a drought and down in the south eastern part of the state we are breaking yearly precipitation records. Harvest is off to a slow start all over. I know this weekend is the big opener everyone gets fired up for but if it were me I would be coming back for late season hunts and skip the circus this weekend.   I wont be hitting it hard any time soon will probably just stick to some sundown hunts closer to home for now. I have some gopro footage I need to get edited from yesterday got alot of good stuff on video including the bird that got away.   Good luck to those heading out this weekend!
    • I'd like to see how the Helix handles interference.   Interference was the reason I went from my Interphase Video to a flasher. Currently using HBird Ice 45 and MarCum LX5.
    • I put all the boats put away,  subsequently the rain stopped.  I'll take that and finish pulling the dock in.
    • Posting.  Cuz I can’t sleep worth a dump.  Gonna be a MEA yahoo for most the rest of the week.  I’ve heard good reports from the friends that are already out there. They took the whole week so I’m driving myself out Tuesday night.     Just getting the the back of the truck filled with dekes got me too revved up.  Gonna be hard packing anything else besides waders, layout blind, guns and shells!  Who needs food and more than one change of clothes for 5 days anyway?!
    • I was ALMOST headed to Ely as well but opted to stick to “productive” pursuits at home, figuring I probably missed the October window this year.  That only lasted a day though before I headed west.   It looked really cool though.  Quiet too I bet.
    • I have a couple LX5s and have been very happy with them.  I had to get a second one for the wheelhouse since after I set it up for the wife, I usually go out hole hopping my original one.  Then come back with fish only cuz I was using the “cheat mobile”.    With the second one I was able to let her stare at it long enough to figure it out cuz apparently my teaching skills are sub par.  She normally wanted to have the camera down all the time but come dark, it’s kinda hard to see anything.     Who knew a wheelhouse and flasher would change her from a winter hibernator to an ice fishing addict.  She wants to go EVERY weekend now.     Anyone wanna buy a wheelhouse? 😉😂   Just kidding.... but I wish she’d wanna try for lakers every once in a while.
    • Was up in Ely over the weekend, darn windy and chilly Sat night.  You make it look so warm and fuzzy with the camp setup and fire. 😊
