I have never had a fish show up as an Arc on my S.I... but then again I have not had the downview yet.. On the SI, fish will show up as a whiter narrow blob, with a shadow underneath it. The distance of the shadow is the distance off bottom.. and at times you can even see what direction they are facing.

I too cant wait to try the new down view softwear. I think its really going to help in weeds as the SI in weeds was almost worthless.

I wouldn't say that it is worthless in the weeds. As Fluker pointed out to me this spring... you can determine weed type (broadleaf versus curlyleaf pondweed) with SI.

(Fluker gets SI and goes to Minn Kota and then wins his circuit's points championship. Coincidence? lol)

The more you use the SI and Down Imaging, the more you will clearly understand what you are looking at. It is truely amazing what we were missing until now. Fish a small rock pile and then Side Image it and find out the rock pile is really a rock bar! Truely amazing.

It is also true that you can tell the difference in types of weeds. From Milfoil to pond weed.

Go to you most fished lake with someone with a SI unit. Image your spots and find out what you are actually fishing. Again, truely amazing what we have been missing.

Question for us sonarly-challenged:

So the image on the screen that we're looking face-on (see page 1) is the image of what's directly under us with down imaging?

Corollary would be: Is the image we see face-on on a side-imaging finder the image of the items left and right of the boat?

So it takes a "picture" from above and shows the face-on "picture" on the screen? How's this possible?

I'm picturing it as taking a picture of a person's scalp and showing his face on the screen. Did I get this right?

LOL @ BPA.. now you got me confused.. LOL.. with the regular SI, imagine a piece of paper folded in a L back to back... the darkest middle of the L is the water under the boat, the lighter portion is the bottom of the lake and also the bottom of your L.. the new Down view is a side view of what is directly under your boat.

its not a front or back view.. its from the side in the direction of the boat. The farthest right on the screen is directly under the boats traceducer(where ever you have it) and as you go left on the screen, its what you have already passed over. Just like a regular Fish finder.. just maybe a more HD lookingish view.... Think of it that way.. the new downview is just like a regular fish finder, but more information.
