I bought a few from Sportsmans warehouse when they were still in Business around here, but did'nt like them because the drags were glichy.

I got rid of them and for 1/2 the price got Cabelas Fish Eagles, they have a very smooth drag and won't cost you a arm and a leg!

that is weird cause all I use in the winter are Tica's SS and SB models ($40-$55 usually) and the reason I use them is that the drag is the smoothest out there!! Are you using the cheaper models or just get some lemons?

I have had nothing but great luck with them. I have never had an issue and they are nice and small for my ice rods. The ones I own and they are mainly the SS 500 I believe have very nice smooth drags.

I also own a few Abu 100's and like them too.

Pretty easy to get caught up in the name game. I know a lot of guys with Ticas who love them. I know a lot of guys with Shimanos that love them. I know a lot of guys with Abus that love them. I know a lot of guys with store brand reels that love them.

To me the biggest factor in a reel is a dependable drag. I’m not a backreeler, and for those guys, heck just about and reel would work good.

IMO, it is very hard to buy a krappy reel these days.

I’ve had enough success with the Abu 100’s that I would much rather buy them at a ratio of 2:1 compared to more expensive reels.

I didn't know about that warrenty on the Cabela's reels. Good thing I keep my reel boxes. I have 3 of them and have been pretty happy with them. Also have Abu, Tica, Pflueger, etc ... all pretty nice reels IMO.

Thanks for the warrenty info!

I have a few Abu 100's, a Tica LF500 and an SS500. Maybe it's me or a fluke, but I think the LF (the cheaper one) has a much smoother drag than the SS, and I was kind of disappointed. The Abu's are great for the price though. For the money, mine have been bulletproof with a very smooth drag.
