Why do all the fish swim in the same direction....

Well, it's really not my question, it's my brother in laws, but it stumped me and I told him I would axe some more knowledgable people....Here's the question.

Why do all the fish that show up on a locator swim in the same direction?

Because the manufactures of the depth finders don't have the technology to tell you the exact direction the fish are going yet.

Back when I used a graph for ice fishing I'd turn my graph so the fish swim towards my hole.

Now that I have a flasher the fish just swim in a circle.

Well you could turn off the FISH ID (little fish icons) and then try to argue about which way they are swimming

They all swim the same direction as they follow each other.

because the bait is always tastier on the other side of the lake.

If you have a clear enough lake, you can see that the fish do not follow a line. They are all over the place and move in whatever direction the bait is. I mean come on...check out an aquarium sometime and watch which direction the fish go.

I had a brother-in-law ask one time if we went pheasant hunting in southern MN because the pheasants went south for the winter.

This reminds me of the time one buddy asked me if duck species ever interbreed. I knew I had him right where I wanted him. I said yes and sometimes even ducks will mate with geese. He was picking up the bait....He asked what happens then? He took the bait! He we are sitting on the edge of a slough waiting for ducks and I reply, "You end up with a bird that goes Qwu-HONK QWU-HONK, QWU-HONK QWU-HONK!" I was laughing like a madman and he just sat there with a look on his face. I dont know if I scared any ducks away but it was worth it.

That is because they are being watched. When watched they'll go in different directions to confuse you.

It's just an Icon and how the software interprets the mark the sonar has detected. There is no actual way to determine if the fish is even moving let alone the direction of travel. The mark "icon" may not even a be a fish.

How come they're always going to the left? If you turn the boat around they're still going to the left. I just need to figure out which side of the lake is to the left cause they are all going to be stacked up there. Right? Uh, no, left.
