Incoming cold front???

I have a friend coming up from IA on Sunday for 4 days for his shot at some fall muskies, what effect will this incoming cold front have on the fish? It looks like sometime Monday the weather will shift and the temps will be in the low 40s at night with sun and mid 60s during they day where we are heading...will this be good/bad/no effect? Thx.

Is Thomas coming up again? You tell him I said next time he comes up for fishing and doesn't call me there's gonna be some beef!

Actually the bump upwards in water temps shut them down for me the last time out. I'm looking for the temp drop to kick the early fall bite into gear, will be looking shallow first, deep second. Find some shallow sand, throw surface baits and blades, good place to start is in front of the hotel at the end of the lake, if you'll be where I think you'll be.

Some of the metro lakes have been good lately too if things get slow, tell T to call me.

Last time in August we had a really cold night I ended up with my best outing ever. We didn't see a thing until after midnight but things turned on after that, so keep that in mind.

Not Thomas...different friend who has never fished muskies before and we will be on that cabbage bed one of those nights, there's a couple fat mommas in there calling for me. grin

Cooling trends are better than warming trends this time of year. I'm looking forward to what this weather will do to the fishing. I'm hoping it kicks things into gear for the start of some good early fall fishing. As it is, we're sitting where we would normally be for late August in terms of water temps. As long as water temps don't drop too fast, it should be good.

Any time you have a sudden and drastic wheather change such as a cold front, fishing sucks for a few days....

I am talking about, its 75 degrees and sunny all day, you go to bed, wake up and its 55 degrees all day with a brisk north wind. Better put the bait on her nose if you want a chance at a bite.

Just my oppinion..

From the weather guy lurking in the forum.... the recent spike in water temps slowed the fishing way down for us last week. Just five fish in five days of nearly round the clock effort on three lakes. Of course, the new guy that drove up caught his in four hours of effort... But, the weak front that arrived still triggered bites. I now want the drop in water temps! 73 degree water is too warm for late September. We also found two dead ones floating. One was a beast with a 24" head and near 51" length. Argh... No signs of abuse but five boats were on the spot where we found these the next day. Probably too long out of water but no way to say for sure. Last photo is one I caught that was right at 61 inches, so I held it on my shoulder but released it unharmed.

I'm sure Shoot2Kill noticed the Iowa State outfit on that sow and got all excited. What CopterJohn has there is a rare picture...someone actually able to lift a Cyclown Cheerleader....he must be at least 7'9" and 600 pounds....which makes his fish pictures even more impressive. Congrats on the fish John, just messing with you guys. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lately we have had overall pretty stable weather. A couple of really weak fronts have come through. The wind switches to the north but barely blows for a day or so and then switches back south. Fishing has been just plain outstanding.

Today the wind switched to the northwest and got cranking. We saw the temperature go from 70 degrees down to about 47 in just a few hours. Even out in the surf (30mph winds) we still saw and caught fish. Got dang cold hands for the first time this year though.

I see that the wind is going to stay in the north and remain strong for awhile. What I don't like is that it is going to clear off and get sunny day after tomorrow. Typically that is the kiss of death in the summer, but hey, this is fall right? I'd much rather be fishing a cold front in the fall.

Just remember... you're fishing muskies and anything can happen. One of the biggest fish we have ever landed came on the first day of a massive summer cold front. The thing we had going for us was the full moon. Fish hard and be heads up at prime time.

Good luck,

Just got back from being out for a couple hours...weather was decent at first, the wind would then pick up and howl, cold cold rain at times, nice again for a bit, more wind, more rain, blah blah blah. My buddy from Iowa isn't getting introduced to muskies the nice way from mother nature! Of all the days to pick to come up and mother nature acts like this!

I did move one fish right before dark not 15 yards off shore when we were just trying to stay out of the wind for a bit...just the motivation we needed right then...tried to give it a solid go when it got dark but the gusts made it nearly impossible to enjoy....especially for someone new to this. Hopefully tomorrow is better....

One of the cold fronts this July was actually my friends and my best week of muskie fishing this year... Hope it stays true through the fall!

Good luck

Trevor

I was on Vermilion during that July cold front record lows.. the week prior to that front the bite was really picking up, lots of fish caught....

Front killed the bite for a couple days and then it picked up again. We boated 2 fish on the backside of it.

15 yards off the shore, eh? i like being right, no, i LOVE being right.

We haven't even left for that lake yet....will be soon...I have some baits showing up in the mail that I'm waiting on and then we're out. Wind is worse up there right now...hopefully it calms down a bit!
