Garage Heater & Venting

I am looking to put in a 60,000 BTU garage heater. Is it better to vent through side wall or roof? Or is it just cosmetic?

Don't know if it's "better" or not, but ours is vented through the side-wall. I believe it's probably just cosmetic, but someone who knows more than me will probably weigh in.

It is purely cosmetic that is if your heater is made for horizantal venting you will have to read through the installation manual to find the recommended installation

I think a vertical installation is going to get a better draft. However, I don't know what type of furnace this is or what type of fuel he'll be burning. I'd go with what Archery Sniper said, follow the directions.

However, if you go through the side wall make sure you don't vent through the windiest side which is normally the west side. Sounds silly to some but if you get a good wind going down your vent you may have problems.

I think that is why they like to vent out the top is not? because you can side vent but do run the risk of wind forcing back down the pipe? There is also a rule of thumb for how high it needs to be above the peak to make sure it does not create a down draft on the pipe. Read install manual before cutting any big holes. Good luck.

Thanks. I am actually leaning towards having a contractor do this one as I have to get a gas line run out to the garage also.

Is Modine a good unit?

I installed a 45,000 Modine Hot Dawg propane heater in my cabin last spring. The vent kit they sell is for venting out the side wall, and it has a power exhaust fan so draft/wind shouldn't be an issue. I had to vent mine out one of the Gable ends of the building, because I mounted it to the ceiling, and going out one of the side walls would have been too close to the soffit. The exhaust requires a certain amount of clearance (I think 27").

I was checking prices out last year and was a bit put off by the fact that some of the units require that you buy a fairly costly venting kit. I was budgeting for about $400 and all of a sudden it got to about $575 and I hadn't begun to price out the gas line. lesson is get your prices lined up before you start to cut any holes.

If you are going out the wall, be sure the pipe extends beyond the soffit. Otherwise, the exhaust can be sucked right back into the attic.

Just follow the manufactures installation instructions and you will be good to go. Roof or wall, doesn't make a difference, only ease of install & looks.
