If you drill through ice often with sand or a lot of debris in it, a chipper is better suited for your needs as it is less damaged by these concerns. A flat edged cutter is more easily sharpened in the field as needed by the user. Less blade replacement over time for this style ice auger. They can open partially frozen used ice holes with less concerns of blade damage.

If your drilling clean fresh ice, and not opening up old holes, than a Lazer shaver system is tough to beat.
