Snaking sprinkler hose under concrete sidewalk

Recommended Posts

I am looking at trenching the front yard to put some heavy duty hose in for a DIY sprinkler system. Front yard isn't too big so I didn't want to install a system, as the backyard is big and run off a well. Only the front would be run from the spicket.

I need to get under a sidewalk though to run the hose to the spicket. Any ideas on hose type and how to get under the sidewalk?

as far as getting under the sidewalk, i have used a regular garden hose with an adjustable type brass nozzle. The type that shoots a small single stream, use it like a boring machine. you will have to dig a hole on both sides where you want to start and finish. the issue you will have is freezing in the winter, you could put a piece of plastic pipe with a hose fitting on at the spicket side and attach the hose there. that way the pipe will drain in the winter. I live in the desert so if it freezes here we are all in trouble.

I've bored under sidewealks before and even in my younger days it's not an easy chore. I would start off by diggin a trench the lenght of a 6 foot spud bag and lay it in the rut. Then start whacking away on the end of it with a 10 pound sledge making sure it's going straight instead of downward. Pull it out a few times as you go. Then take a piece of PVC and get it under the walk so you can run the hose thru it. If you want to get fancy, put air chuck somewhere on it so you can blow out the system.

Dig a trench the width of the sidewalk where you want the pipe to go. Set a 4 inch or smaller pvc pipe in it put garden hose in pvc pipe turn water on and push pvc under sidewalk. The water will evacuate only enough dirt for the pvc pipe as you push it through. Gets rather messy but works well if no rocks in the way.

    • First problem: work.  Had something come up last minute on Tuesday that required I come in Wednesday.  Finally out and ready to get some rest before hitting it for 4 days instead of 5, but I’m here!   Birds have been disappearing this week on the strong winds but there are still pockets and presumably more on the border areas/ice line.  Nice weather predicted for tomorrow and a good bunch of birds were scouted today.  We’ll see what happens.  I hear we’re in for a big blow this weekend.
    • Well may be next year I'll try and creep by!  Depending who wins in Midterms and if we are still talking to each other then!! 😋
    • Anyone care to help out on this topic?
    • Blue Jays don't chew holes in my soffit But I only have a couple and they don't seem to bother the other birds.   One reason might be that they are too big to sit on the perches on the feeders, so they get to scratch for spillage.
    • Yeah, of that deer farm and the ag boys who allegedly supervise them.  Or maybe we will get the story of how it has been around for many decades and nobody noticed it until now...
    • Seeing good numbers of birds so far this year.
    • I went up north to our seasonal spot this past weekend and winterized the camper. 😥   We also ended up moving it to a different spot in the campground that is larger and more private and has a deck! I already can't wait for next years camping season! Still waiting for a visit from @leech~~ too. 😉   I might still go up again this fall if the weather ever warms up but this Saturday looks like it will be cold again up there. 35 degrees and windy is the forecast. We can still use our camper but there is no water in the campground so it is not conducive for bringing the wife. If we would still get a warmer weekend (above freezing at night) they will turn the water on in the shower houses at least so we could have a bathroom.
    • That's his story and he is sticking to it.
    • I hear ya. Although unlike CWD, I don't think there will be as much debate among different hunting groups about how bad the effects are and what, if anything, should be done about it.  Doesn't help the deer any, but at least it won't turn into debates/accusations/conspiracy theories that rival any political campaign.
