Change the oil and cleaned the plates? When was the last time they were replaced?

I have my doubts, but clutch springs might be bad. Or a simple adjustment if the plates are worn. Not sure if you would have a hydraulic clutch (vs. a cable)on there, but if so, there might be an air bubble in the line and will need to be bled out.

I realize it's a different animal, but my old DS 650 ATV was known for bending the shift fork in the transmission, causing this very issue you describe.
