Permanent Stands

Recommended Posts

This should be an interesting topic. What are your thoughts on "legally built" permanent stands on public land? Personally I have not sat in one for several years. I think every one of my relatives use them. They seem to shoot deer every year, but the mobility would drive me nuts. I do not dislike them being there, but I don't use them. My feelings are that deer seem to know where they are and make routes around them. I like to be mobile and also enjoy the thought of new scenery every once in a while, instead of the same old thing year after year. Anyway, how many of you guys use them, and what are your thoughts? Season is close!

I have on a few occassions, sat in perm. tree stands I know are not being used, but I didn't agree with the builders choice of locations and I get too cold sitting on the side of a tree up in the wind. I prefer using a ground blind built with some camo and natural materials.

I don't really hunt public land, but I love to hunt out of permanents. I think the key is how close to the trail they are & how much you use them.

If you only use them primarily during gun season, they're off the trail a ways, & you're quiet & scent conscience when using them, they can be productive year after year. Personally I think if there's a lot of hunting pressure there's scent everywhere during gun season, which reduces the importance of controlling it then to some degree.

I have hunted out of permanent stands, back when you could still build them of course. I have shot deer out of more permanent stands than portable, I think the deer just become accustomed to the stand as a part of their scenery after they are there for a while. Last year I shot a doe right after it ran under the ladder to a permanent stand, that was on private land in wisconsin, a relatively large stand at that.

I love deer hunting out of permanant stands. I use permanant stands all season every year, but our crew has so many stands you can use a different stand every day. It does make it easier to sit up there when it is like a treefort.

I have to admit, if you keep your stands up, they are way safer than most portables. I agree with one of the other posts...using other people's stands. They never seem to put them where you want them. smile.gif You always run across stands that are put at the bottom of the valley where you can see about 30 feet, instead of putting it on top of the ridge where you can see better. Have shot alot of deer off of permanents, but not recently. I think when I was younger, my old man thought it was safer to put me in permanants. Probably a good idea for young hunters.

    • Posting.  Cuz I can’t sleep worth a dump.  Gonna be a MEA yahoo for most the rest of the week.  I’ve heard good reports from the friends that are already out there. They took the whole week so I’m driving myself out Tuesday night.     Just getting the the back of the truck filled with dekes got me too revved up.  Gonna be hard packing anything else besides waders, layout blind, guns and shells!  Who needs food and more than one change of clothes for 5 days anyway?!
    • I was ALMOST headed to Ely as well but opted to stick to “productive” pursuits at home, figuring I probably missed the October window this year.  That only lasted a day though before I headed west.   It looked really cool though.  Quiet too I bet.
    • I have a couple LX5s and have been very happy with them.  I had to get a second one for the wheelhouse since after I set it up for the wife, I usually go out hole hopping my original one.  Then come back with fish only cuz I was using the “cheat mobile”.    With the second one I was able to let her stare at it long enough to figure it out cuz apparently my teaching skills are sub par.  She normally wanted to have the camera down all the time but come dark, it’s kinda hard to see anything.     Who knew a wheelhouse and flasher would change her from a winter hibernator to an ice fishing addict.  She wants to go EVERY weekend now.     Anyone wanna buy a wheelhouse? 😉😂   Just kidding.... but I wish she’d wanna try for lakers every once in a while.
    • Was up in Ely over the weekend, darn windy and chilly Sat night.  You make it look so warm and fuzzy with the camp setup and fire. 😊
    • I have no doubt that by now there is something on the market that is better than my FL-20 and my FL-8 but I already own them and they work for me and I am long over the days where I have to have the latest and greatest fishing equipment.    Most of these gadgets, gizmos and lures are better at catching fishermen than fish.
    • My bird places nice with vexilars and doesn't get it too bad when there is a marcum in the next hole.   Keep my FL18 as a backup/loaner, it's been bulletproof.  But I haven't looked backed since I got an ice55 bird.
    • lol. my brother hates them also cuz they thow a robin chick out of the nest sometimes. Only a couple here, if i had too my they would meet my 17 pellet. Red squirrels get a pass. not enough here. Grays are a different story.
    • put a new floor in over the past month and finished it off by winterized it on Saturday.
