Thanks! It's from the Blue Hills area near Rice Lake, WI. He should be on my wall by late May/early June. The best part about it is that I got the mount for free! I took it to Upland Taxidermy in Hayward because they were running a contest--the biggest buck (# of points + inside spread) gets a free mount. They also do great work there.
The buck was hit high by a bow hunter (at very close range) and was on its death bed when I shot it. The blood was water thin, the liver was 4x the normal size, and all of the vitals had large black spots on them. It looked like the arrow caught the top of a lung, but it appeard that happened as long as a month before I shot it. Despite its poor health, it still dressed at 206 lbs. and was chasing a doe!

That's great buck Cleo! I'd put that hog on my wall in a heartbeat. Interesting story too. They are incredibly hardy creatures. I'm glad you were able to harvest it before it died.

Were the internal organs really smelly? I'd have thought if the buck had been shot as much as a month earlier it would have been really gangrenous.

Sam-
When I found him, I figured I gut shot him because of the smell. Thought I was going to lose my cookies. I was happy to see I hit him in the heart and a lung.

Actually, it was closer to Rice Lake. I am originally from Cameron, live in Superior, and have a brother living in Hayward. He did some advertising for the taxidermist, so that is how I found out about the contest and the quality of the guy's work.

We have a theory that for every big buck you see, there are two that you never see unless you are very lucky. It is a theory we believe more and more with each season!

I’ve hunted the Blue Hills for almost 20 years now. I’ve never seen a buck that big alive over there. He’s a beauty. If you drove him up to Hayward can I assume you took him in the Birchwood area?

    • haven't had cable for 3+ years now if i can get my internet bill back down it will be great thinking of going back to frontier half the cost run netflix and antenna in the attic. most of the time i just check the news on the phone. other then that its disney movies. we do get some chatter since the metal roof went on but no big deal
    • can you post a pic of that feeder please? thx
    • Been hearing 2 pileated woodpeckers in the trees for a few days. Was hoping there was a chick around. It just flew in and I got a quick shot. Male chick. First time I have captured one.
    • What do you know 2 games in a row for Sano. Cron too, he's been the steadiest with the bat lately IMO. Thought I seen something about them getting a pitcher that the Angels let go. I'd love to see them pick up another lefty for the bullpen as well.
    • A lot of it depends on the bandwidth that you are paying for. They will limit your pipe. Best bet is to hook up a computer directly to you router and see what you get on your speed test. The mesh systems are  awesome for both range and through put, but any wireless router is only going to deliver on the bandwidth that your isp provides. If you find that your hard wire computer is a lot faster, the first step is to update the firmware on your wireless router and go from there.
    • I finally put out the blackbird proof suet feeder. The juvenile redwing blackbirds have recently moved in and have been gorging on the nutty butter. Never had any grackles so far, hence the reason I’ve waited until now to swap feeders. They haven’t been hitting the sunflower chips much, so I’ll hold off on swapping those feeders for now.
