  1. A group of high school buddies and some of their family make an Annual trip up to Baudette, MN to fish Walleyes on Lake of the Woods. I look forward to this trip each year! Since this is an Annual Trip we all put some money and bragging rights on the line for the Angler who can catch the biggest fish of the weekend, take home the Trophy, $400 Cash and call themselves "Mr. Walleye" for the next 365 days. Watch the first full day of fishing out of Ballards Resort and see 2 new PB's!
  2. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE SEASON IT HAS BEEN SO FAR, AND WE'RE JUST GETTING STARTED! Now, certainly hitting some of the best fishing of the season for ALL species!!! Walleyes have been on the chow on most of the midsized bodies of water along the weed edges, sunken humps and bars anywhere from 12” to 28” of water. Keep an eye on the primary transition areas such as sand to muck, boulders to gravel, weeds to sand (etc.) These areas are key right now. Leech Lake does have a bug hatch going on currently, but the fish are still active and hitting. Slowing down your troll, and using simpler presentations like a Lindy Rig, Slip Bobber, or Spinner or Slow Death Rig tipped with Crawlers, Leeches, or Chubs have all been producing exceptional numbers. The Bass have been extremely aggressive! Smallmouth can be found off the rock bars and sunken humps, hitting both Drop Shots and Swim Baits. Likewise, Largemouth Bass, can be found along the pencil reeds, out from docks and various surface structure, as well as in the cabbage beds. Spinner baits, Drop Shots, and Jerk Baits have all been effective in targeting the “bucket mouths”. Crappies and Bluegills can be found within the cabbage. As cabbage is just starting to peak, find the tallest and greenest cabbage which is close to deeper drops and you will find the fish! Small jigs tipped with Crappie Minnows or a Small Leech, or even rigging slowly over the cabbage has proven to be successful! We certainly hope you all have been out enjoying this terrific weather we have been having and been able to keep your lines tight! Cheers! -Alice Wiese Wheezy Outdoors
  3. A group of us recently made it up to Flag Island Resort for 3 days of multispecies ice fishing on Lake of the Woods. The accommodations and folks who worked at the Resort were top notch! Bending over backwards to put you on fish and make your trip one to remember. The Fishing - Day 1 it was decided to stay, somewhat, close to the Resort in the MN side of LOTW to target Walleye, Sauger and Perch due to 24+ hours of snow. We got into pretty good numbers of fish and some quality fished showed up as well! Below is a video of that action from Day 1.

Since this is an Annual Trip we all put some money and bragging rights on the line for the Angler who can catch the biggest fish of the weekend, take home the Trophy, $500 Cash and call themselves "Mr. Walleye" for the next 365 days. The Largest Perch and Heaviest Eelpout/Burbot also take home prizes. I didn't have the camera's rolling on Day 1 (which was lights out) but on Day 2 of the trip we were filming. It was fun day and I even caught my new Personal Best Perch!
  5. @bassfshin24 and I snuck up to Mille Lacs for 2 days of fishing recently. We were targeting Walleye near shallow structure in the low light hours and bumping out a bit deeper during mid-day. The first day was slow for us but we found more action on Day 2 including my 2nd biggest Walleye through the ice. I also caught my first tagged Walleye! Pay attention for my slip and fall...
  6. A group of us are planning on getting together on Lake Osakis for the day on 8/18/18 for a day of fishing and a midday picnic at the Battle Point Park. We would enjoy connecting with some fellow anglers from the site to connect and have some fun. Osakis is a great lake for big gills, slab crappies, nice walleye, pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass. The best walleye bite has been during low light periods. Sunfish and crappie bite all day. We plan on taking a break around noon at the Battle Point Park for lunch. Right now tentatively looking to connect around 8-9 at the access. Otherwise look for a red and white Warrior and connect with me, "Borch" on the water I'd you'd like. I might even have a fishing report really fresh fishing report for you.
  7. For the 2018 Minnesota Fishing Opener we went up to Lake Vermilion in search of Walleyes. The morning started off slow for us so we changed up the tactics and it resulted in a livewell full of walleyes, a few Slot fish and a new Personal Best!

It was a tight race going into the last day with not many Slot Fish caught but one bite is all it takes... What type of Annual trips or traditions do you guys have?
  9. Please share your lindy rigging techniques and pictures/videos in this thread. Feel free to create your own Topic about your favorite method to catch walleyes.
  10. My buddy Tony (@bassfshin24) and I hit the road after Christmas to go and chase some Walleyes on Mille Lacs Lake. We had plans to fish shallow structure during the low light hours and then head out to deeper structure during the day using an ATV. Day 1 the temps had warmed up some from the recent negative temps but we were surprised to find a very slow bite. The slow day was topped off by some ATV problems which left us scratching our heads on what to do for Day 2. As it turned out our options were minimal so we decided to pull out on the lake by hand to some shallow structure. It was -15 when we hit the lake but we were greeted by a bunch of hungry Walleye!
  11. My buddy Ryan and I packed up the truck and headed North up to Upper Red Lake in MN the Saturday after Thanksgiving since we didn't have much or any fishable ice in the Twin Cities Metro. We stayed on shore and walked out in the morning to the 2nd break. We setup our shack in about 10fow. It didn't take long for us to catch our 8 keeper fish and then the fun started! Catching these fish in shallow water (10fow and under) is an absolute riot!
  12. Hello everyone! It has been a great year of fishing so far and many beautiful fish are being caught everyday. In Minnesota working rock reefs and points in the morning and evening hours and then moving to deeper areas off of structure during mid day has been best. Gravel bars, humps and deep mud areas have all been producing fish as well. The Best depth has been 13-20 feet in the mornings and evenings and 20-30 during mid day. The best tactic has been using a jigging rod with a lindy flyer, buckshot, rippin rap, charmer or flutter spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail. Live minnows under a bobber have worked as well. Over on the Canadian side the Crappie bite has been good in all north and east spots. A tungsten jig with a plastic and waxy has been the best combo. 30 feet for the crappies and 25 or deeper for the walleyes has been the best. For the walleyes a weasel, lindy flyer or charmer has been the best. There is a lot of hard packed snow on the lake and it is suggested to have scrapers for snowmobiles, many snowmobiles were overheating last week. Over night we got a few inches of snow which should help the situation. We'd love to see you soon! Until next week, good luck fishing! 13. Fishing in 22 feet , 25 with ice for hog lake winnipeg walleyes using a flasher and jigs and minnows.
  14. Was able to get on Lake Erie on Saturday, first week of good ice so I walked out from shore with my Kenai Pro packed with all the gear. Started marking fish right away and within the first half hour had our first fish up the hole. Nothing Lake Erie special, but all 23-24 inch fish, and the louder the bait the better!
  15. I am looking for some ideas and new lakes to explore this winter. Not looking for your hot spot and will do my own research on lakefinder. What I am hoping for is to narrow down my search based on personal experiences from members here. If you prefer to send by PM rather than post, that's fine. I live in Rochester and our immediate options are walk-on only reservoirs. I have a heavier portable and am primarily setup for ATV type portability. It doesn't look like we are going to have stable ice in the South anytime soon, and it doesn't look like my usual treks to URL and Devils Lake are in the cards this year. So, what I am looking for are: 1) Lakes within 2 hours driving from Rochester. Thinking central MN. 2) ATV access is a must 3) I prefer less populated. Only accessible by ATV would be ideal. 4) Likely taking a teen who has never fished (but desperately wants to learn) with me. Species and size are not as important as numbers, but I don't want to spend all day chasing dinks. 5) Lodging close by. Don't need a resort or excess amenities but something close by if we fish late and/or decide to make it an overnighter. 6) I have looked at Waubay area. It's a bit further than I am thinking but not ruling it out either. Haven't found a ton of info on it related to my "wants" above. Thanks for reading and please let me know know if anything comes to mind. Would also love to hear from any of you with similar interests that would like to explore together. Thanks in Advance!
  16. Hi everyone, trying to plan out a winter camping trip for the first week of January and looking for some suggestions of MN lakes to look at. Spent a week on Trout Lake in the BWCA north of Vermillion last year fishing lakers and camped on Vermillion the year before that but looking for something new this year. Decided against another BWCA trip due to the work involved with hauling in all the gear so looking for something accessible by snowmobile. Ideally looking for Walleye and pike; crappie or other species would be a plus... I know both Upper red and LOTW are good fisheries but seems like camping there would be a little tricky as we typically just set up a tarp in a swamp or sheltered area and sleep under that. Not looking to steal anyones secret lake, just hoping for some suggestions of areas that we could check out. Thanks!
  17. PIERRE, SD - The walleye population in Lake Oahe is still struggling to rebound from the 2011 Missouri River flood, but one bright spot is that the fish that are in the lake are getting bigger. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks senior fisheries biologist Mark Fincel said walleye and other game fish in Oahe are getting a boost from large numbers of baitfish such as young white bass, perch and shiners. The average fish caught by anglers this year on the Dakotas reservoir was about 16 inches, an inch bigger than last year's average. Another positive sign for the fishery is that numbers of smelt and lake herring baitfish have been slowly increasing since 2013. Those baitfish provide the fatty food that sustain older, larger walleyes.
  18. On quite a few local lakes, the walleye bite is really strong on leeches/crawlers. The problem is the pesky panfish (sunnies/perch/rockies) are constantly pecking away at the same depths I have been finding the eyes. Really annoying. We have had a few double where 1 guy gets an eye, the other a tiny sunny. Would love to go more than 10' without the pannies ripping of my expensive bait. Even with just a plain black hook those buggers are there. I suppose I could go back to minnows or start pulling plugs, possible gulp, but man I just love rigging live bait. Anything that I am missing to avoid the panfish???
