WHAT AN INCREDIBLE SEASON IT HAS BEEN SO FAR, AND WE'RE JUST GETTING STARTED! Now, certainly hitting some of the best fishing of the season for ALL species!!! Walleyes have been on the chow on most of the midsized bodies of water along the weed edges, sunken humps and bars anywhere from 12” to 28” of water. Keep an eye on the primary transition areas such as sand to muck, boulders to gravel, weeds to sand (etc.) These areas are key right now. Leech Lake does have a bug hatch going on currently, but the fish are still active and hitting. Slowing down your troll, and using simpler presentations like a Lindy Rig, Slip Bobber, or Spinner or Slow Death Rig tipped with Crawlers, Leeches, or Chubs have all been producing exceptional numbers. The Bass have been extremely aggressive! Smallmouth can be found off the rock bars and sunken humps, hitting both Drop Shots and Swim Baits. Likewise, Largemouth Bass, can be found along the pencil reeds, out from docks and various surface structure, as well as in the cabbage beds. Spinner baits, Drop Shots, and Jerk Baits have all been effective in targeting the “bucket mouths”. Crappies and Bluegills can be found within the cabbage. As cabbage is just starting to peak, find the tallest and greenest cabbage which is close to deeper drops and you will find the fish! Small jigs tipped with Crappie Minnows or a Small Leech, or even rigging slowly over the cabbage has proven to be successful! Hello from the NW Angle! Fishing is really starting to pick up, which usually means Spring is on the way! Fishing on the Minnesota side has been best at first and last light, which can make for long days on the ice this time of year. The Sauger bite has really picked up with a lot good sized eaters coming out of 21-25 ft. The most effective colors for both Walleye and Sauger have been Chartreuse, White, any Glow/lighted/UV (specifically red) and hammered gold. When fishing at depths less than 20 feet, keep an active presentation. Northerns tend to be most active in the early afternoon which is a good time to take a break from jigging and put out a tip-up. Fishing on the Canadian side has been good since the last snow storm and continues to produce Crappie and Walleye. A light setup for crappies with plastics or larvae has been productive. Slush is still frozen in well-traveled areas but it plentiful off trail. Fishing will continue to improve as the weather does, there is still a lot of time to fit in a last minute ice fishing trip!! Hello everyone! It has been a great year of fishing so far and many beautiful fish are being caught everyday. In Minnesota working rock reefs and points in the morning and evening hours and then moving to deeper areas off of structure during mid day has been best. Gravel bars, humps and deep mud areas have all been producing fish as well. The Best depth has been 13-20 feet in the mornings and evenings and 20-30 during mid day. The best tactic has been using a jigging rod with a lindy flyer, buckshot, rippin rap, charmer or flutter spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail. Live minnows under a bobber have worked as well. Over on the Canadian side the Crappie bite has been good in all north and east spots. A tungsten jig with a plastic and waxy has been the best combo. 30 feet for the crappies and 25 or deeper for the walleyes has been the best. For the walleyes a weasel, lindy flyer or charmer has been the best. There is a lot of hard packed snow on the lake and it is suggested to have scrapers for snowmobiles, many snowmobiles were overheating last week. Over night we got a few inches of snow which should help the situation. We'd love to see you soon! Until next week, good luck fishing!
