  1. I have a Benelli Montefeltro 12 Gauge and I would recommend it because it can be used quite effectively in most hunting situations (although I spend most of my time after pheasants). It can hold up to a 3 in shell (4 or 5 of them if I am not mistaken) which I now think is plenty. I was getting sold on the 3.5 in capability when shopping for shotgun until I came to my senses and bought the Monte. It is light to carry, but not too light because it doesn't kick much with heavy loads. Most importantly it fits me great and my accuracy has improved too, but does come with some adjustments if needed. I have never second guessed the purchase.
  2. My dog has had lymes and missed most of the hunting season one year. As a result, I discovered that the lymes vaccination is only about 70% effective. Using frontline is also a must, but there is no fool proof way to prevent tick bites. Also, the "bullseye" rash that is described from a bite doesn't even always occur. So be careful.
  3. I agree that the concept of lead shot producing less cripples appears to be sound. But from my own experiences I have more dead birds and less cripples when I shoot 3" #2 steel through a modified choke than any other combination with lead. I think for me it has to do with the shot pattern I get with this combination in my gun. I have noticed how the wind has an effect on steel shot though, so I do take that into consideration if lead is an option. Personally, I lost one bird this year (while it was snowing). This is going to happen regardless of what you shoot. Over time it is inevitable.
  4. One thing not mentioned yet. If you decide to buy a new hand auger, then get one smaller than an 8 in, like a 5 in. It is cheaper, lighter, much easier to drill holes with, and potentially safer for littles. Besides, it is surprising how large of fish will fit through one even though you'll probably spend most of your time fishing panfish with your son. One more thing, it saves floor space in a sled style portable too.
  5. My dog tree'd one grouse hunting last weekend.

    Best baitcaster?

Is the core worth the money over a curado?

    Best baitcaster?

I have always had good luck with Shimano reels too. I had a chance to check out the Revo's tonight and they seem like a quality reel. Has anybody had any luck with Pflueger reels, good or bad?

    Best baitcaster?

I left it open-ended because I wanted to see what kind of responses I would get. To answer some of your questions, I want to stay under $200-$250 and will probably go with the old standby 6:1 gear ratio.

    Best baitcaster?

I am in the market for a new baitcaster. It has been a few years since I have had to buy one so I am looking for suggestions. The reel I am replacing is primarily used for plastics, but I am just looking for the best all around reel. Thanks in advance for your input.
  10. My lab went through a bout with lymes about 1.5 years ago. It was actually Thanksgiving day, when I let her out of the kennel and she was limping (lameness is a common sympton, the limping might switch from one leg one day to the other leg the next), no sooner than I noticed this she had a seizure (not a common sympton, but difficult to watch happen to anyone let alone a dog). She tested positive for Lymes and had not been vaccinated. She was treated with a heavy dose of antibiotics for at least 6 weeks. It was tough on her and she wasn't herself, low energy and poor eating habits. She was finally able to go for a couple short pheasant hunts after Christmas. During this long process I was able to learn some information about the disease and now I have a vet that I can trust. He does push the vaccination for lymes, but does now reccomend it because it supposed to be about 70% effective should be used in conjuction with Front-Line. Burl, my dog made a full recovery, but she also developed some poor eating habits. I have to coax her into eating at times, but she doesn't have the vomitting.
  11. Slick, I've got to see this too. Please send to [email protected] Thanks in advance.
  12. As soon as he knows his name. Make it fun, keep it short and sweet. The hallway is a great idea.
