Had to put my 12 year old GSP down today. Just sucks and huge kick in gut with everything else going on at the moment. This was the last thing I needed to deal with right now.

He went down hill fast. Found some issues with his prostate late last week. Tried a Hail Mary over the weekend with some meds and didn’t see any sign of improvement so had to do what was best for him and put him down this afternoon.

My first year pheasant hunting was 1990 and I have been around a lot of bird dogs in the field and hunt tests over the years. Have owned more than one GSP and this guy was a special one.

Would appreciate it if you all could give your bird dogs a little extra scratch behind the ear for me.

Hardest part was breaking it to my kids. On top of that with the covid virus they wouldn’t let me go inside any vets office to be with him. Wasn’t going to allow him to go down without me so made them do it from my truck. Delicate situation and I support the policy not to allow me in the building. Just another thing that made this difficult.

Its all bittersweet I already had another pup on the way but wanted them staggered and not start completely over.

Here is a tail feather salute to every bird I personally shot over him:

hunted in a t-shirt yesterday and did not enjoy it one bit. I had to stop and water my dog down on December 5th, what a weird year! Birds were hard to come by I think they were out scratching in the fields. Lots of hunters out yesterday I may have had better luck playing the license plate game than hunting.

Bring on the snow and cold please. Need to get these birds bunched back up and some frozen water to walk on.

Spent the day in sharptail country today. No tailgate pics because I didn’t realize it would get dark at 4pm this far west lol.

I don't think the traffic would create too much an issue...probably nothing more than is already coming through the area.  The lick may make them stop for a longer period in the summer/spring months.

Another fun day hunting in the snow. Had a blast with the pup. Found this car out in the middle of nowhere thought it would make for a great pic:

Yesterday was too blasted windy to paddle out but this morning was better - and colder!

    Frozen anticipation

    Watching ice making

Light set due to paddling and not having lots of birds around.

Hooked a flock of 7.  Only 4 left.  Just took a few light notes on the call to get their attention.

One chance was better than none.  Better than watching it on TV too.

monstermoose78 reacted to minky in Idaho elk hunt
I recently spent about a week and half in the panhandle mountain area of Idaho. We were a mixed group of elk and deer hunters. What an awesome hunt in a great area.

This was my first hunt for elk with an experienced elk hunter (childhood buddy). I learned so much. One bull was harvested on opening day. On day 5 we got into a bunch of elk with one being a herd bull, no shot. Next day was cow season so we backed out.

Early the next morning we were back in the area. Fresh elk beds and urine puddles showed we were right behind the elk. Fresh tracks showed they were walking ahead of us but not running. I pulled off to let my buddy and his wife continue on. About a half an hour later a pair of moose hunters in a side by side pasted me on the logging road head towards my buddy. The elk heard the side by side and bugged out.

The next morning we were going to try again but there was a truck at the trail head. The last morning of cow season a very large group of people were camped blocking the trail head, the joys of public land! We continued hunting and exploring new areas.

We ended up with 1 elk and 6 deer before half of the group headed home. The other half are still out there trying to fill tags.

I am already planning next years hunt. I learned so much and seen / explored new area. I only had an elk tag but hope to have both elk and deer tags in my pocket next year. I will also be better prepared next season. I am looking forward to next years two weeks of mountain therapy.

Thank you guys very much.   It did indeed suck.   The end was tough and slow and I felt terrible for him.   9 weeks in the hospital and the last two were not got- on a vent and in a lot of pain when conscious.   But no more pain and suffering and in a better place now.   Better times ahead for all.

My dad passed yesterday.   Sad deal but I'm so thankful his suffering is over and Mom can have his company again.    After his service is over I'll find some time in the woods.

MN was tough this year.  I managed to stay on birds by walking a lot of miles, but had a hard time getting in close enough for a shot as most would not cross fences or leave hens...  Ultimately I had to belly crawl up on this guy when he would not leave his little patch of ground above me for over an hour gobbling and drumming within 50yd the whole time.
