  1. The Final ChapterThis morning was bitter sweet in a couple ways. The first was the alarm clock didn't go off at 4 a.m. Which was nice, but it also meant I wasn't in a treestand today. At day break, I again loaded up Gunner and headed to Wisconsin. One quick pit stop for breakfast and we soon arrived.Once at the parking area, I leashed him up and off we went.Instead of cutting cross country up and down the terrain to get to the last beds, I decided it would be easier to take the longer route along a trail to get there with less effort. Running around on just a few hours sleep has a guy looking fo

  4. I can't speak for deer numbers up north, but there are too many deer down in 347 where I hunt, and hopefully the DNR lifts the one deer restriction in our area for next year. I will shoot the first tasty doe I see, and I am more than OK with the other people hunting my ground doing the same.

    Deer Camp Grub

Well guy's I'm heading out up north for deer camp. Just north of Duluth in area 180. Been hunting there since the 60's. Many memories and more to come. The deer grub is in the truck for the meals and some extra sausage and Canadian bacon for a couple of other camps there. Looks like a milder opener than most but we will have cold nights so if we should get one they should be fine till next Tuesday when I come back home. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable time out there. For me it's being there that's the deal. See ya next week!! good luck.

  6. Shot this buck on Sunday at 8:30am. Came with a smaller 8pt shortly after a quick rattle sequence. I passed the on the smaller buck at 20 yds, then this guy waltzed through at 40 yds, never gave me a shot while ignoring grunts and can-calls then showed up at my friend's stand 300 yds away about 20 min later. It never presented my friend a shot either and made a full circle back to me about close to an hr later, upwind and broadside at 25 yds. Not quite one of the bigguns I had on trail cam, but I don't care... I was presented a great shot on a great public land buck and I couldn't be happier a

    How early?

I exclusively hunt public land, and my goal is to be settled into my stand AT LEAST one hour before shooting light. That usually means leaving the truck about two hours before shooting light. It's usually 30-45 mins to walk in, and then another 15 mins or so to get dressed and climbed up the tree. 9 times out of 10 we're the first truck there and won't see anyone before we hit the trail in. I have a few reasons for this. First is safety. I almost never touch my feet on the ground in the daylight during gun season (way too many knuckle-heads who shoot at deer like it's gonna be their last

I have had pretty decent luck getting permission to hunt turkeys but I think I could kiss most of that goodbye if they went to an open season. As it is, certain groups usually hunt certain seasons and we all respect it. The landowner can easily manage it by saying "This group has A season and the next group has C season." It would be a major pain for him if he had to try to schedule everyone with it being wide open. If more turkey hunting took place on public land I'd be all for it, but as it is now, that's not

that sounds great without the kraut, ive a fear of kraut, i used to work at a turkey processing plant, one night after work i drank a quart of black velvet, I made it to work the next morning two hours late but I made it, the cafeteria had brauts and sourkraut serving for lunch, the smell and ahangover induced projectile vomiting to many times to count. havent been able to stand the thought of it since. Im sure your moms recipie is delicous tho. sorry hope i didnt hijack that thread. like smuf dose.

    RUT REPORTS

Last weekend I hunted west of Mille Lacs on some public land I've hunted the last two years. Saturday evening wasn't all that exciting, I had one small buck pass through a saddle about 60 yards from me. Sunday morning started off slow. Not so much as a squirrel from 6:30 until 8:30. Then the switch flipped...in the next 30 minutes I had 6 different small bucks pass through within 50 yards, coming from 3 different directions. At one point I had 3 different bucks in front of me at the same time. They were looking for does big time! I had made the decision that I wasn't going to shoot an

I get to my stand pretty much at legal light. I hunt public Land for rifle, blaze shows up better with light, and we usually hear2-3.shots before leaving camp. As since 1992, our party has shot 1 deer within the first 30mi of light, and only twice have we notice we bumped deer. 90% of our deer have been shot between 9am-12pm. I see no need to get cold before I can shoot a deer, or use up my "stillness" earlier because I wasted and hour in the dark. At least where we hunt.

I'm wagering bumping deer you'd otherwise have a chance with, when using a gun. Also, you can attempt to tip toe in to spots much better when it isn't dark.

for years my dad always told his hunting buddy Woody and him were the only ones who headed to the stands about 15 minutes before sunup usually getting there sunup or later. They were convinced that was the deal. I've shot 23 deer in Minnesota one was a few minutes after legal shooting time and for years was always out there in my stand 45 minutes before sunup. I'd bet ten of those deer I shot going to my stand basically still hunting super slow, mostly around 1pm or so. I ease into the day, being at my stand around sunup as long as my tardiness doesn't effect another hunter. Only issue i

Can I watch? For me, when I eat it (not too often) It's Franks in the can for me. My cousin tells me I'm a poor excuse for a German because I don't like pork roast with sauerkraut or that yukky warm German 'tato salad . And, he ruined my smoky bean soup by pouring vinegar all over it. Stoopid kraut.

  32. Sounds like you just WANT it to be a managed area. I sure as heck hope this is not how the DNR is setting bag limits. That would be a complete joke. If all the DNR has to do is bow down to the wims and wishes of the cry babies to set our bag limits, our deer herd is doomed in many portions of the state. Just because some people want to be able to shoot more deer, does not make it a sound management practice.

  33. I will say that carving duck decoys is more involved than doing fish. I am really enjoying it. It also feels good to be carving again and reminded me of why I started this in the first place. After the build up to the Alexandria show last spring my arms were so messed up I couldn't carve anything for several months. Then moving into our new place it all added up to idol shop and quiet equipment. I should have enough stock to get through the Grand Rapids and Blaine shows. It's really interesting seeing the amount of detail and research these guys put into it. I am a folk art carver. There are

  36. If I don't have any luck with bucks the next two weekends with my bow, I'll be using my archery tag to find the next mature doe I encounter. I'm in a Hunter's Choice area and I see lots of does. I think it should be Managed. And really, more people like myself need to speak up. Because that's how the DNR sets bag limits. Its not science. it's the most vocal hunters who determine what the DNR decides. They base their limits on what the most vocal hunters want, not the health of the state's herd or anything related.

    2015 Waterfowl Season

Your stories about your dogs brought have brought few tears to my eyes; decided I should be grateful this season for a dog that I truly thought would not be able to hunt this season, a vet had even told me maybe I should consider new activities for him. By the numbers, it has been good, just not a great season, my wife son and I have harvested quite a few wood ducks, some teal and some mallards. I don’t ever remember shooting so many woodies so late into the season. Most of our hunting has been up in the Leech Lake, Winnie area. What really makes this season memorable is my 20 year old son

Not that easy. 1 i could haul down the minimum maint. road if i hasent rained. but have absolutley no way to turn around a 20ft V house, plus it would get scratched to heck, it a half mile of tunnel trees, my truck has a hard time not getting scratched or stuck.2. south end of property is land lockedby neighboring owners. althou I do have permission to cross, I have to haul it across 1/4 mile of rotation crops, generaly chisled plowed. and if i got it there to out land , it would stick out like smurfs ham head on webol woble. so i go home.

    Deer Camp Grub

Reinhard, here is a quick recipe using smoked pulled pork for sandwiches. Toast both sides of the bun, a heaping pile of pulled pork, top with your favorite coleslaw, and a bit of bbq sauce, we use sweet baby rays. Got that out of a smoking recipe book and it was call a "smoked a$$ sandwich" Any which way you cant go wrong, but thought I would throw it out there! Also you mention, only dark beer allowed at camp. Fargo brewing co, has an excellent dark, called Stones Throw, its a Scottish ale, and very good if you ever see it around!!

Got the pulled pork done yesterday for one of the deer camps meals. Not just pork and sauce but I added some onions and jalapeno peppers to the mix. Since my sauce [you can get the recipe on my page if you like www.sausageheavenoutdoors.com]. I used Reinhard Caught A Buzz Sauce for this. This sauce was made by using my Butcher sauce and mixing it with one of the posters on here [Caught a Buzz]. His mother made up the Caught a Buzz part of the recipe and I thank her for that. His sauce is more on the mustard side and I also posted that on it's own. It's also a great sauce for ribs ect o

    if i get a smoker?

smurfy- it's pretty easy and really turns into more of a hobby than cooking or work. Besides the wealth of knowledge here, there are quite a few websites dedicated to smoking food. Start with ribs. Only time I had an issue with ribs is when I overloaded my Masterbuilt and the ribs seemed to steam and render more than smoke. I freaked out and eveyone loved them for a Super Bowl party. Follow some directions suggestions and then do a 4 pound pork shoulder for pulled pork. Give it time and get a temp probe, key item for smoking meat and getting it done right. Smoke some salmon filets i
