vinyl instead of paint?

It will work OK, but probably not as good in the long runs as paint. Vinyl will fade from sunlight, and is more delicate than paint if it was to get rubbed up at all. That's why we replace our vinyl on the racecar every year. By the way, decent paint will still be cheaper, and much easier to install, unless you really know what you're doing with the vinyl.

Judging by the way the decals on my boats have shown wear and tear after a few years I'm not sure that vinyl would be a better choice. If you use a good etching primer then a good quality paint, I think you will have better luck in the long run. Jobs like this are usually best handled by pros.
