whine in motor

7 posts in this topic

Fired up the motor and ran the boat around for a while. I have a mercury 50 horse 2 stroke and when it is running or idling it has a high pitch whining sound. Not very loud at all but reminded me of a belt in a old dodge shadow I had before it have out. Anyone have any idea? Runs fine but dont want to hurt anything by continuing to run it.

thanks

Can you tell where its coming from? If heard dry drive shaft splines make noise (as was the case with my Dads 80hp Merc) and I've heard the upper drive shaft bearing make noise.

I'd get a stethescope or a long screw driver and see if you can figure out where the noise is coming from.

My 90 horse Merc does the same thing generally does it if I run it wide open then she makes a noise like a belt is rubbing
