KVD comes up just short-----Menendez Wins

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Kevin VanDam made a decision on the first day of the Toyota Trucks Diamond Drive on Lake Dardanelle that might have cost him the victory.

The day had already been shortened by a three-hour fog delay, and he was catching multiple limits of the same size fish. With what he thought would be three more days of fishing left, VanDam made the decision to leave and conserve, finishing with 15 pounds, 6 ounces.

When Saturday was canceled due to weather — or maybe even if it wasn't — VanDam figured he should have stuck around and looked for a kicker fish.

"I didn't want to waste them and catch a bunch of them trying to catch one big one, and I probably should have," VanDam said after the weigh-in on Sunday. "I don't know that I would have ever caught a big one, but in hindsight, you've always got to catch what you can catch on a given day."

In the two full days he had left, he caught 18-6 and 19-8. By the time all the fish hit the scales Sunday, it was 2-4 short of champion Mark Menendez's 55-7.

Looking at the forecast, he had planned on a cold weather bite in practice, and it paid off, giving him a bag 2 pounds heavier than the next largest. But he figured it wouldn't be enough.

"I knew being 5 pounds back, it was going to be tough to make it up in one day," VanDam said. "He was in a hole and had a spot to himself, and I was fighting with a lot of other guys in one area. It was just a lot to overcome."

Chris Lane, who had the second biggest final-day bag and his biggest of the tournament on Sunday at 17-11, said he thinks it was the right decision to cancel Saturday, and it's too hard to speculate what eight more hours would have done to his chances at a win.

"I think the fish were continuing to move into my area, but it would have been miserable for everyone yesterday," he said. "I don't know that it would have helped or hurt me."

Lane's regrets came on the two full days of fishing. He left his best spot in the middle of the day on Friday and found out later that Denny Brauer caught 15 pounds there in the afternoon. He also had to make a tough decision on Sunday, which turned out to be the right one.

"I left about 20 minutes early today because I thought I might have a chance at this thing, and I left them biting," said Lane, who most likely wouldn't have made up the 7 pounds he finished behind Menendez. "That's one of those things where you just have to make the right decision. If you're a multi-millionaire, stay there until the last second and run it back, but if not, you get the points and the money that you can."

Both Lane and VanDam had to jump in their truck Sunday afternoon and think through all their decisions from the weekend on the seven hour drive to Decatur, Ala., where they start practice on Monday for the Dixie Duel on Lake Wheeler.

The drive will put VanDam between two lakes that have served him up "could-have-beens" and have had him second guessing. He said he made a haunting spot-saving decision on Wheeler last season and finished 8 ounces behind champion Jeremy Starks.

"I've come to the conclusion that you've got to bust them when you can," he said. "I made the same decision on Wheeler last year and it cost me.

"It's never any fun to lose, but I guess that's just the way it goes."

Did you guys see that Menendez won fishing out of a little flat-bottom aluminum boat!! There is a photo gallery on the BASS site that shows him trying to get to his fishing area. It's really cool you guys should check it out. It says that he had to put a new wrap on his boat each day because it would get torn up so bad getting to his fishing spot. He definently deserved the win!!!

it also said, that the boat he used was totaled after the tournament... he borrowed it from a friend.. Guess he will be able to afford to buy said friend a new one.

He had to get the wrap re-done after every day it was trashed so bad. That will be cool to watch in a couple weeks.

That's even better! Interested to see what adjustments the top 3 made after that storm that went through Saturday, that the others did not make.

It looks like Menendez downsized to a Strike King KVD tube and was fishing the same structure he fished the first two days. Just a tough time getting back there, obviously it paid off big though.

It was very cool to follow this event to see how these guys fished the lake just a week after we were down there. Its amazing how good these guys are even under tough conditions.

Me and my buddy were making 30 minute runs upriver every day to the spadra area where most of the top finishers fished. However, we were hanging a right off the main river into the spadra creek part instead of going straight for about 1 more minute into the shallow fingers that the top finishers were in. Sooo close, yet so far!

right on oly. Detroit river? He banged up the motor on the big boat twice in practice before getting the flat bottom with jet outboard.

The day 3 cancellation helped Menendez more than the rest of the field. He would have had to cross a lot of rough water in that little boat to get to his area. He may not have been able to make it. I think BASS should have let these guys fish. They are professionals. Let's see who can handle the rough stuff!

if you look at the side of the boat, it looks like he took the decals right off the side of the boat!

    • Talked to one of their guys at the Ice Show last week,  what I believe was their entry level w/ramp (like 6.5' x 12') door was over $13k.   I thought it was quite pricey with really not much for any options.  Quality appeared to be good but way more then I would spend for it.  Their biggest selling point is the light weight and pounds per square inch on the ice.   They do have  channels on the inside to run you wired through if you want to add items.   The inside was extremely bright - almost to bright for my eyes.   I believe they said they are located in Litchfield, MN.
    • I would give your first statement 5 Pinnochios.  The first tax increase on people making less than $200k he signed was only 16 days into his first term.     "1. A 156 percent increase in the federal excise tax on tobacco: On February 4, 2009, just sixteen days into his Administration, Obama signed into law a 156 percent increase in the federal excise tax on tobacco, a hike of 61 cents per pack. The median income of smokers is just over $36,000 per year."       And then, of course, the big one is Obamacare, which was ruled a tax by the Supreme Court, and affects many taxpayers under $200,000.
    • Trump is way ahead of you there buddy.
    • The only tax change that occurred was allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire. All tax bills must be introduced in the House of Representatives, so if you are unhappy with the current state of taxes, you should start there.   Also for those wondering, Clinton's tax increases would have added about $140 billion per year in tax revenue.
    • Sooooo....we were at a breaking point before Obama care....anyone actually think their policy under Trumpcare is going to reduce costs with an increase in benefits.....over an extended period of time?
    • The Art of the Deal......
    • So in a nutshell, you wouldn't really recommend buying U.S. Treasury bonds for an investment.
    • I'm not sure on how much foam it took.  It has over 2" on the bottom.  What happens with the cold surface is you have to "flash" the surface with foam then go over it again, it uses more chemical to do the same job.  So the price to do a cold house is more.  The foam comes out hot & creates more heat during the chemical reaction.     The froth paks were more expensive than having it done in my case.
