I have a few other questions if you guys wouldn't mind helping me out, but I am going to carve a few of my own decoys for next year and I was wondering how do you know how much lead to put into the decoy to make it balanced? Also with the fins does it really matter to get very detailed with them? As I will be using these decoys for spearing not decoration.

I found a method for weighing decoys on the Michigan darkhouse HSOforum. First find the center balance by placing on a pointed edge, I use a small board that resembles an up side down vee. Mark that spot with a pencil, then mark another spot about where the gills are. Between the two marks is your lead cavity. You will drill about 1/3 the depth of the decoy. There is still some trial and error involved, though.

With the fins it doesn't matter how detailed you are, the fish don't care. I just like to add some finer details to mine.

Say what you want, but spearing one that size is what I call marksmanship. grin

That was Memory lake in Wasilla, AK. There are no slot limits or possesion limits, so we spear every pike we can. The pike in this area were illegaly introduced and are wiping out the native salmon, char, and trout populations and Alaska Fish and Game wants them eradicated, so we try to help any way we can. Hey, if they want me to spear every pike that I can, who am I to argue. grin
