dan z
I have a 224 and LOVE it, I did race a jiffy three horse and it was not even close I think I was starting my third hole when the jiffy finished the first hole. I am going to putting a level on the gas tank so I drill straighter holes, cutting crooked is kinda fun tho. you can really pull some good prnks on guys when your hole hopin' as for the weight its pretty darn light, just wish the blades were cheaper to replace 1 set of 8" and 1 set of 4", I have never even seen 4" power blades.... tonkapat
$70 a year annually for blades makes the $300 price tag skyrocket each and every year. The 224 is a great auger recuts holes better than the nils or laser. I'll take the $15 resharpening over the new blade cost any day. Pay now or pay later your choice. pdk511
ya theres no need to replace the blades every year. since theres four of them they dull even less
Fishin=Easy
I picked up a 8" 224 last week. This auger absolutely hates the ice. I updated from an older mag chipper. What a difference. Brand new its crazy fast. The only time i saw a nils in action it was barely in action laying on its side on the ice gettin' yanked on for 15 minitues. Its a blast to drill hole with this thing. First 20 holes I drilled I was laughing out loud how fast and easy it was. The next hundred or so I was still amazed. Should have got one sooner. Get-em-good
What type of motors are they going to be putting on the strikemasters next year? Anyone know?I would like to see a Honda on their 4-strokers. Don't see too many Honda 2-cycles, but I bet if they were to make one, it would be the best out there. FISHINGURU
good deal...almost all augers are nice but the nils dominates competition...except the blade cover is the worse thing i've ever seen.
DTro
Wow, talk about splitting hairs. And if you drove faster to the lake, you could be fishing sooner It’s as simple as picking up Auger X,Y,Z drilling a series of 25 holes each, analyze each for its benefits, weight the cost factor and make an educated decision. Plenty of good augers out there. Plenty of reasons to buy or not buy. Very few if any categories that the Nils isn’t a top performer in. Bottle Fish
I usually do drive faster than everyone.
jltimm
Yeah, the augers (Strikemaster and Nils) are that close in drilling times, but the difference in price is another major factor also.
DTro
pan-man, there is no winning in this game. There is no “best” auger, just some features of each that make it desirable. The argument can seriously go on for an eternity (and is some cases it has) 1. Nils is the lightest fastest auger out there. 2. Commercial grade Tanaka motor that is rated twice as long as the competition. (yes twice as long) 3. No need to spend extra to buy an extension. 4. Sharpening can be done here locally at half the cost that you posted. (see sponsor showcase forum) 5. No plastic handles or auger flighting to break. 6. Comes with a handle to change over to hand auger for early ice or BWCAW type areas. Now for the benefits of above one must decide if the extra $ is justified. For a lot of people it is. For others it isn't. I'm happy with my auger for the reasons posted, but wouldn't feel bad if there is a "better" auger out there. The Nils works great for me and that is all that matters. That should be the bottom line with any auger. Most of the people who are so readily willing to say bad things about the Nils have never even tried one. harvey lee
If SM is using the China motors I don't think next year will be their year, cuz I don't think they will be durable anymore. I bet the new SM motors is similar to Tanaka motors cuz it is probably the exact China knock off of the Tanaka motor. Strikemaster will be using a motor made in Germany. Their new auger is called a Solo and it cuts pretty darn nice.If one hits the throttle a bit when they pull it out, the hole is much cleaner and yes, you can fish out of that hole. When I used the new Solo for next year for Strikemaster, I also hit the throttle to clean the hole out. TravP
Strikemaster is going to use Solo Motors, a German company, as their power head units on their new "Lazer Pro" next year.
Get-em-good
Never heard of a Solo motor, but lets hope it's a good one. This is the way I look at which auger is better, etc.: If the Nilly's were the best, then they would outsell the Strikemaster or at least compete with them, it should be able to if they are in fact that good. I am fairly certain Strikemaster outsells the Nils about 1000:1. Actually it is probably closer to 100,000:1 but who's counting.
harvey lee
Strikemaster is a established company and they have been around forever.Nils is new in the auger market and they are doing very well. Many ice fisherman cannot believe how well this auger performs once they see it in action. thefarmer
I think the only way to choose one auger over the other is to throw them both in a sled when its 20 below, bounce them down a rough ice road out to the middle of the lake where there is 2 foot of ice, drill 25 holes with one, pick up the other auger, drill 25 more and see which one gets you fishing faster. zamboni
1. Nils is the lightest fastest auger out there. Last time I looked my StrikeLite is the lightest auger on the market. While you are in your garage mixing gas and oil, hoping you aren't mixing it too rich or too lean, I will be out drilling holes
FISHINGURU
i don't have much slush in any holes i drill with any auger...its pretty simple to keep the auger spinning as u come back out of the hole.

Steve Foss
Solo is known for quality. The company has produced many top commercial grade small engines. I have a 6 Hp Solo kicker outboard motor that is stronger built than any other of the 2-stroke kickers I've seen. I need a carb gasket set in order to get it running just right (they discontinued the motor some years ago), but I'm not letting go of the motor. I'll keep searching for gaskets (could even cut them myself, I suppose), rather than give up this very tough motor.
