Lap top not picking internet

14 posts in this topic

I have two PC's and a lap top all working fine until a week ago and now the lap top won't connect to wireless unless I unplug the router cable and go direct, is the only way I can get the internet. Some one told me, maybe I have a bad wireless card but I would not even know what to look for or where to buy. Is this something I will probably have to take into to best buy?? Ticks me off, 14 months old, so its 2 months out of warranty.

Thanks

This happens to mine occasionally. There are 2 reasons in my situation that it happens. I have my wireless router set up to not broadcast the SSID, and to only allow specific MAC addresses to access the network. For whatever reason, once and awhile my laptop can't see the network anymore. To fix that, I temporarily broadcast the SSID, and once the laptop picks it up I disable the broadcast again. The second thing I have to do about once every couple of months when it doesn't work is to unplug the power from the wireless router for about 30 seconds and plug it back in. It works again after that. I have a Linksys router that I've had for about 4 yrs now and these are the only 2 "issues" I've had with it. Good luck!

Check to see if your lap top has a manual switch to turn your wireless assistant on and off. I have bumped mine off a few times. The icon that tells you that it is on or off only shows up for about a second, so it is easy to miss.

Let's start simple. Make sure that the wireless card is not turned off. Most laptop have a button that turns the wireless off and on. Also right click on the my computer icon and go to manage and then device manager and make sure the wireless card is not disabled. If all that checks out go to your wireless setting and redo your wireless setup.

I am guessing something in those items listed will be the issue.

I would gow tith Upnoorth's post. Start witht he simple. If it was connected before it has to be either something simple or your card did die.

I have had a couple of similar problems. First of all power down your router, wait, and turn it back on. I would also restart your computer while doing it. I have had problems with the addresses between my router and computer and rebooting both seems to solve it.

I've had problems with my wireless getting slow - rebooting my computer seemed to help for a while. But the fix was taking it back to Best Buy and the 'Geek Squad' updated my wireless router driver and it hasn't given me any problems since. I wouldn't buy any laptop with less than the 3 year warranty. It's a little more expensive but well worth it.

I agree with UpNorth, Cad, and jw.

About once per month I have to go and reboot the router, running a Belkin Pre-N.

That's what I do (D-Link router) and it always works. Also there should be a reset on the back of the router, make sure you hit that.

Are you using the software that came with your router? If so you'll need to us that to connect, its probably sitting in your task bar. Open it up and go through the steps.

Not sure about, i will have to get a hold of the person who hooked the router up.I know I get pop ups from the Linksys router so i would say yes but, I have not seen that for some time.

    • So Del is following in Down2Earth's footsteps on Trump, good to know. Hey I will take Trump over Hillary but why vote for either of them if I don't have to, why play that game?
    • At least homeboy's doom and gloom is broken up with moments of describing how personally awesome he is.
    • Better save some of that sauce to drink while watching the Cheeto train run off the tracks.
    • Where did you get this "hero" stuff,  Dave?  And Trump is different in that he had never engaged in party politics either as an office holder or a candidate, unlike all the other Republican candidates.   And as for dumb and extreme ideas being a bad thing, I thought you supported Gary Johnson?   And the two party system is a fact of life, the way elections are set up in the US with the Constitutional need for a majority not just a plurality of electors.   Perhaps somehow it could be shoehorned to be a coaliton deal, if electors were free and states weren't winner take all.   But the way it is now, it is a two party deal, just like it has been for a very long time.   No endorsement necessary to recognize the facts.  As for the opposition, I never saw #nevercruz, or #neverjeb or #neverkasich...  So how much support should candidates have to have to be included?  You want Jill Stein as well?   How about the next half dozen down the line?  Why did Gary Johnson not go for the Republican nomination anyway?   Surely Big Weed would have financed his run.
    • Does anyone out there know if its even possible to put 2 atvs on a 6x12 anyone make some kind of deck of front to hold a wheeler I've tired every thing but know realized that i would have to pay fees and re license a new trailer which i don't want to do. If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated!!
    • try some paint thinner it might sound harsh but it cleans and puts a shine on it also. of coarse try it on a corner first just to see it melts
    • I hope they figure out the problem.   When I had that with charter here in Rochester, it turned out to be a poor job of putting the connector on the cable where it went into the house.  There was a little piece of foil shielding intermittently shorting out the cable inside the connector.  All from a half arsed job of installation in the first place.
    • Couldn't the same be said for Cruz, Sanders, Paul and most of the other presidential candidates? Don't you always have to take on your own party first? Every candidate has to do it, nothing new here. Again, what candidate is not opposed by all the other candidates. The reason he is so despised by the party at large is because most sane members know that he is not capable of the diplomacy necessary to do the job.  Traditional? Wouldn't the traditional way be to try to gain the nomination of the party you were a member of when you won 2 terms of Governor? I don't see what is "traditional" about going outside of a political party that would afford you much more money and influence than a 3rd party. So Trump's a hero for trying to use a political organization to further his own agenda? Rand Paul has been trying to do what you are talking about but I don't see you gushing over him for it.  That's how it has to be done because of the corruption of the 2 party system that you are more than happy to whole heartedly endorse. Face it, Trump is no hero. He's just the latest GOP candidate with dumb and extreme ideas that the party base seems to love but no one else does.
    • Sure del. I have 2 patches and rotate. Some years a don't need to make any. It's fine. The roots just get bigger;
